Should I leave gaming completely?

Sorry for your bad luck, we had a similar fate from Micosoft and tossed our 360 for good and moved on to PS3.

PS3 is the same price as the Xbox with more features, you dont have to buy a bigger HD on the PS3 right away - get the cheapest or best Slim you can afford and add a 500+ gig HD in the future for 100 bucks (any 2.5" drive works on PS3s) Also, BluRays which almost all PS3 games are on, are much stronger Dics that hold more information and are much harder, almost impossible to scratch.

But if money is an issue, I guess its time to put console gaming on hold and then you will see if you want to save up for a new console or not.

A high power AC unit right above it?

Damaged discs?

I think I see your problem. Sorry, but I call gg on MS.

(To clarify, A/C units, especially "high power" ones, vibrate. A LOT. Discs in XBOX's don't take kindly to being moved around in the system. Viola, problem solved, continue being a gamer, just one that doesn't overlook the obvious. :p )

So, should I even bother staying a gamer? please! someone! convince me I don't need to just give up the pastime I love so much!
I think you've answered your own question there, buddy. If you really don't want to stop gaming then don't do it.

You said your problem is with the Elite, right? Well, I've got the standard 60 gig model Xbox, and it's been in almost constant use for two years. Never had a problem. Why not downsize to a smaller model? You can keep the HD from your Elite, and just stick it in the new Xbox.

Older PC games are pretty damn cool. Games like UT 2004, Half Life 2, Painkiller etc run fine on nearly every computer. And don't forget the enormous amounts of indie games on the internet...

I don't know, maybe a change of pace would be good. You could try some retro or last gen gaming. Look into trying more indie and flash games on the web.

Try something different like getting into rougelikes, dwarf fortress or interactive fiction on your PC. System requirements are usually fairly low, except dwarf fortress can be a CPU monster, and there is no DRM. These games have can have a lot of depth but you have to put more effort into getting the most from them.

Save up for a PS3 or something if you still feel like it. Some people might tell you to suck it down and stick with XBOX since they don't have any problems but I don't feel comfortable telling you be loyal to products that failed on quality.

This! There's no reason to stop gaming entirely. It's a bit melodramatic. :p

Not that I blame you. What a horrible string of bad luck.

Not bad luck. Just a low Perception stat. (Which a lot of people seem to suffer with here, lol) Look at my previous post for clarification.

AC unit is 7 feet away, in the window, 360s on a pad on my desk. No vibrations whatsoever from that thing, but the 360 stays nice and cool

*Cough* Now is your chance to save up a little and acquire a better console. Namely the Playstation3 Slim. *Splutter* Its not that much more than you'd pay for a new 360 and you get more bang for your buck with Free online, Bluray, a movie download system, soon taking the first leap into true 3D home Gaming. *Wheeze*Cough* Plus, Killzone, Uncharted, Gran Turismo, LBP, Mod Nation Racers, Metal Gear Solid. *Cough*Cough*

Phew... That was a bad coughing fit I had there. Forgot what I was gonna say...

Ah, because earlier you said right ABOVE it. So, you see my confusion.

Also, direct air from the AC isn't good either. When it hits the warm from the box itself, condensation can occur, which is basically like turning your 360 into the worlds biggest steamed paperweight.

Why that would scratch your disc, I dunno. But to have that many consoles suffer the same problem, you're obviously overlooking something.

Yup. Give it up and get out while you can. Build houses for the underprivileged, or start a nightclub, or soup kitchen it up, or go exploring around your town every day, or get into hiking and meet a family of bears that welcome you as their own.

Or, you know, escape into a fictional digital reality for a few fleeting hours at a time.

Not like it matters.

Don't I just feel chipper today! :D

The AC nearby to keep it cool is also a newer development. The first system failed on a table by itself away from everything (no extra cooling). The second was when it was set up in my basement (just a fan blowing dust away), all that was nearby was a foot-tall Optimus Prime. But how would poor placement lead to the system corrupting my entire hard drive? I know how to care for electronics. This 360 has traveled with a PS2, an SNES, and a Wii for as long as I've had it. None of my other systems has so much as frozen up in years. How much is there to it?
Level surface. check
Nothing nearby or underneath (or above) restricting air flow. check.
No moisture around. check (except for maybe the recent system failure)

Shouldn't the NEWER system be able to withstand identical conditions as the PS2 or SNES?

New Gen consoles are famously unreliable compared to the older stuff.

They just don't make em like they used to. My old big PS2 has been dropped, stood on, had stuff spilt on it, is covered in dust and still works fine after more than 8 years of flawless service. And yes, it has sat directly underneath a large A/C unit for at least 6 of those 8 years.

Apparently an xbox 360 can't even be exposed to air.
