Don't really understand what you want answered, but it's... fun?
I mean compared to other RPG games like Gothic , or Oblivion or Neverwinter.

Lord Of The Rings Online went Free To Play a few months ago. If you want to crack into MMO's, might as well try that one. It's kind of similar, but you won't have to buy it anew every month. ... Or at all, come to think of it.

What it's like playing WoW, depends on how you want to play it. There's this stereotype that portrays WoW as nothing more than kill x in y amounts, but that's usually only when you're levelling yourself up to 85, and even then, there are dungeons to break the repetition. Of course, people are perhaps too uptight about playing with other people and prefer playing by themselves, hence the repetition. Trust me when I say this, there are some decent people in WoW, get into guilds and parties or play with someone you know, makes the game that much more bearable.

The game is not that hard to get to, it's actually regard as one of the more streamlined MMOs and more easy to play than most.

Addiction is not as most would make of it. Generally, if you get addicted to WoW, you can guarantee the same to happen for any other game. Personally, I didn't get addicted at all in my time playing.

You need the game itself, which generally you don't really need to buy considering you need to download it and all. Subscription is around $15 US, do the conversion yourself. Plus the 3 expansions, although you only really need them when you get to higher levels. Otherwise, you will be capped at 60/80 without those expansions.

In terms of suggestion, if you haven't played any MMOs up to this point, I suggest going mage. Read up some guides on the classes and races too and get a rough idea. Mage from what I've seen, is fairly easy to play and in my opinion, straight forward. In parties, you'll generally be the damage dealer, just don't expect yourself to have a lot of survivability. Also, I can't emphasize enough, be sure to find some people, real life, in-game or elsewhere that you can play with. It will be a lot more fun if you do so.

Two more questions , please (*puppy dog eyes*)
1.Is there just PvP or are there co-op modes or how does it work ?
2.What's with this alliance vs horde conflict ? Is it like with sports teams or something ?
Depends on the server. In certain servers, areas are divided into Horde territory, Alliance territory and contested. Contested is where if you see an opposing faction player, you or them can attack on sight. There is no restriction, you may find this frustrating or interesting. Alternatively, there are battlegrounds where you do objective-based battles, again with the factions.

The Alliance vs Horde is basically the two factions in-game. You choose where you want to be. Take my word for it, take Horde, it's generally a lot more friendly.

I may actually flip a coin to solve the alliance/horde dichotomy - too many opinions either way , or I'll just play one faction then the other.
Thanks , I'll be as sociable as a fat nerd can be :)
I have played some MMOs , but those like Maple Story were a pain , and those were the ones I played most.

Thanks for the reply.

You're joking right? I can't tell you how often I've been stalked by a lvl 20 whatever member of the horde dropping duel flags by me while his lvl 60 buddy stands in the bushes a few feet back, or being griefed by high levels killing quest givers in all the lowbie zones. When I played a horde character however; the alliance was polite enough not to pull shit like that to the horde areas. There was however the occasional person who would follow me around doing a chicken dance expression.

There are nice people on both sides. There are jackasses on both sides. Unfortunately, due to the horde being so amazingly vocal over the horde being better it causes a typical response that new players are prone to choosing horde to avoid being on the 'sucky alliance'

Anyways, I never actually got beyond lvl 40 before getting horridly bored. I'm an MMO Strategist, and in WoW, you just can't customize. There is exactly 1 best item for each equipment slot for each level. There is exactly 1 combination of traits best for each role your class can play. You have exactly the same skills as every other person the same class as you. If you vary even a little from what has already been accepted as 'right' you will be treated as an idiot.

What really feeds my craving for an MMO experience is City of Heroes; you can freely customize your costume; you don't look like anybody else unless you choose an outfit that's kind of cliche` You can choose from several main archetypes, then around 8-10 main then secondary power sets, 15 powers in each of those; numerious enhancements to improve to customize even those powers, and a dozen or so power pool sets that any archetype can use.

No, dont get into WOW. Oh sure it's fun at first. But then you get your first level 80 (well 85 now) and will have nothing to do but find a guild and raid. I am so happy Cataslysm came out. With the new guild leveling system and the harder dungeons, if you were not in a guild before the expansion then its almost impossible to get in one. Nowadays there are no pugs for raids and such so i just said screw it and quit.

seems like you made up your mind.

Although if you are stuck on what server to play or something you could always roll on the same server as me.

Send a PM if you're interested or something...

(now I feel kind of awkward for offering that)

Hey,
I've been contemplating getting WOW and playing. Most of my friends are into small Facebook games now so I'm pretty much a lone wanderer.I decided to come to the Escapist forums and get an informed opinion and so here I am.

These are my questions :
What's it like playing WOW ?
Is it hard to get into ?
Is it as addicting as they say ?
How expensive is WOW ? Do you need all expansions ? Does the world change ?
What should I expect ?
Any suggestions ?
Tips & tricks for getting started ?

Any answer or suggestion would be appreciated.
Why does it say you joined 2 days from now? I can understand 1 day ahead but 2? I'm a bit worried....

OT:
Addicting
No
Yes
$15 per month, I would get all expansions, not really but since the new one it's all weird
Basically if you play any MMO now it's the same.
Don't go Shadow Priest, people get pissed.

I would say that WOW is incredibly addictive but only if you let it be so. The $15 bucks a month has always been a turn off for me simply because I don't want to essentially be buying a new game every 4 months. An MMO I would recommend though would be Guild Wars. It's similar to WOW while being free to play and keeping it very entertaining.

Depends on how social you are with it. I generally disliked the other players I met, so once my real life friends were either out of the game or into guilds, I stopped playing. As with all things, your mileage may vary.

What's it like playing WOW? OK. I want you to write something on a whiteboard/blackboard. Make it a simple sentence, something easy to remember. When you're done erase it. Do this a million times.

Is it hard to get into? I'd say impossible. The gameplay is repetitive, there's zero real customization (Something I've got a huge demand for) and the other players make me want to have even less to do with humanity.

Is it as addicting as they say? Not really. I dropped that game like it was made out of failonium.

How expensive? IIRC you need to pay $50 and buy (now) TWO expansion packs. Does the world change? It almost never does.

What should I expect? Expect to play a vastly different game until max level (The incredibly boring exp one) to have very uninvolved combat at end game. If you're on a PVP server expect very high leveled characters to swoop in, brutally murderate you for no reason, and run away.

Any suggestions? Don't even bother. You can get the same WoW experience from progress quest. Which I will now link you: http://progressquest.com/

Linking is over. Enjoy.

Warden is a problem, only if you run bot programs.
It's no big deal.

As for Phising mails.
Blizzard bans first, then mails. If you ever get a mail that says you need to click here in order to verify that it's your account, or you will get banned.... is a phising mail.

Don't click on stupid links, don't buy gold with RL money and you'll be fine.
If you played a while, and actually find you enjoy the game a lot.
You might consider buying a Authenticator. It's a small keychain size device that renders a 6 digit "random" code you have to enter beside your password when you log in. And you get a bonus pet ingame.

-Fair bit of grinding and your typical RPG play and questing. Fun with a lot of mechanics and stuff to try out and mess with
-It's harder to get into now with all the expansions, patching and content than it was in vanilla. Play wise it's easy to get the hang of and there's helpful tutorial tips as you go
-It can be addicting but it solely depends on whether or not you will pull yourself away and go out with friends etc. End game things like raids will eat up your time if you choose to do them though
-For vanilla it's like £15/$20 and each expansion has varying prices. But keep in mind the biggest price problem is the £9/$15 a month for subscription. You don't need the expansions as such but without them there is a lot of things you will be unable to do
-A lot of running places, grinding and asshole players killing you randomly (if you play PvP server that is). However there is a very good looking, expansive world, great team working opportunities and constant additions of content and fixes.
-For starters play a normal server (you can only be attacked by enemy team players if you type /pvp or attack an enemy yourself). Pick a basic class to start (warrior, hunter, rogue etc). I'd say try playing a horde char first since I found alliance players to be bigger dickheads. Learn your class mechanics by testing them in different situations and learn what moves beat each class for PvP. Oh and biggest tip - learn your class role, so many people don't do this and screw over their fellow players.

I haven't played for a few years so some of these things may be wrong/outdated but most should still apply. But yeah get the free trial first and then see if you like it from there.
