Should I post this online?

If I have not made it obvious by now, I absolutely love fantasy and romance. My two favorite genres of literature and manga and anime. I've actually written a few stories on my computer, and yes, they are romantic fantasies. I'm a little self-conscious about myself and what others think of me sometimes, so even though my brother already said my stories are good, I think people will call them immature or stupid. It doesn't help to be in a school where the kids are brutal, so it's like I'm a twig getting run over by rocks.

I can already predict one kind of comment I'd get: "Stop being a pussy and stop caring what others say." I take comments to heart; I'm that kind of person that sucks at ignoring people. I think it's because my family is known for being nosy (hehe). I'll just say that this isn't supposed to be a very emotional thread. My question to you all is this: Should I post these stories online for others to read? Is it worth posting it for some to like and some to scorn? I don't mind criticism as long as it's constructive, but again, the kids at my school cuss at you for raising your hand...

Again, this isn't an emotional thread. It's an advice thread. I need a bit of advice from fellow nerds/escapists/related others.

Go for it. I'm a writer too and post my stuff on Deviant Art, and on this site (there's an old thread for short stories, I'll find the link in a second for you). The worst that can happen is that someone says they don't like it, in which case you try for constructive criticism and improve as a writer.

So yeah, go for it, put them online and share your talent with the world :D.

Post them, if anyone insults you for them the mods will eat them. If you can't feel safe on the escapist can you feel safe anywhere?

Note: The stories don't sound like my kind of thing but I bet we have members who would enjoy them.

Sure, why not? you can't please everyone, even with the popular genres.

With that said, where are you posting them? I'm a storywriter, myself, and I'm still generally new to the popular interwebs. I'll read your stories if you read mine. Honest.

On another note if your brothers say it was good, it's probably is. I seriously doubt they'll just say that to spare your feelings. But sure I'll check out your stories and evaluate them too. If you'd want me to do that.

Oh, and as a heads up, there's always someone who will not approve, no matter what you'd post, so dont let it get to you. And if you DO get upset, do it off camera, or something.

I'm not a fan of Romance, but I'll give it a read.

EDIT: never mind about not knowing where to post.

My sister recommended a good website call FictionPress I'm thinking of posting them either there or on DeviantART.

Oh BTW I think I messed up on typing, but I only have one brother.

Well, see, that depends.
Where is the line drawn on "constructive"?

I've seen (and known) a lot of people who harp on about how constructive criticism is okay and that they welcome it, but the first comment that isn't mindless sucking off is met with a torrent of cursing and namecalling.
It's pretty fucking ridiculous, I must say. There is the mindless "nurr this is shit go back to writing 101 fucktard", of course, which is to be ignored (although, like you, some are incapable of that), but people seem to pile anything that is even slightly negative into the same category.

So, if you find yourself filled with incoherant rage and/or begin cutting yourself furiously every time someone says something like, say, "the structuring is a little wonky", then no. Don't post anything online. At all. Ever.

Otherwise, go for it. Here, if you are so inclined. [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/18.110578-The-Short-Story-Thread?page=1]
Don't worry about necro'ing, bringing it back into the public eye is probably a good thing.

EDIT: Ah, beaten to it.
This is what I get for having slow internet.

I often get constructive criticism from my sister on both my writing and drawing. I read her the first chapter of one of my stories, and she told it was good, but that it had many run-on sentences. So things like that won't bother me much. And as most of my stories have several chapters, it'll help me improve for the next.

And some stories are purposely immature, so those I won't mind being called immature.

I might be interested in reading it myself. And who knows? Maybe it will get read by the right guy and he will start publishing your work.

Best advice I could give you, is if you really want to put your stuff up on the internet then by all means go ahead.

It's ok to take criticism to heart, I do it too, but it's NOT ok to let it get to you, if you get bad criticism from some one who says "Omg this is crap," or whatever, use that as motivation to put more effort into your work for your next post.

I ask for peoples opinions all the time, and I ask them to be honest, if what you're doing is good for you, then you don't need other peoples opinions, but if you're doing something in hopes that people will enjoy it as well, then figure out what it was that they did or didn't enjoy about your writing.

After taking these steps myself, I've been motivated in trying to write a book, which I'm working on right now.

No, you should never post anything online. In fact, you shouldn't even have posted the OP. People are already judging you.

On a serious note, you should go for it. I'm certain that there will be people who really enjoy and appreciate your work, even if there are those who might not. You can't please everyone. If you're looking for constructive critique the Escapist tends to be polite and sensitive when it comes to these things. If you don't want to post it here at least post a link!

I'd advise against it, but then again I'd advise against sharing you create on the Internet. If I were you, I'd only share my creations (writings in this case) with people I knew (in person) and trusted, and even then it's iffy.
