My laptop (of nearly three years) just died due to a hard disk failure. Now I'm asking you Escapists should I get a new laptop, one that will have more RAM and Harddrive space, or should I just replace the hard disk? I have a factory job, so money isn't too much of an issue, although hopefully I'm still under warranty.

ask me this:

WHY DO YOU NEED A LAPTOP!

if you can compensate for the lack of mobility and the space (from what I gathered from other people that a desktop is infinity big >.>) then you are in the plus.

Note taking plus research while on a university campus.

All depends on the specifications of the laptop. If it's reasonably new, getting a new hard drive might be the best way to go, but there's no point throwing good money after bad at the same time.
Uuuuuhm, 2GB Harddrive (1GB is taken up by Vista for the most part), 120 GB Harddrive (doesn't really make a difference, don't have too many games on it), and a really shitty integrated graphics video cards.

A new drive is going to cost ~$50-75, depending on the size (unless you're still under warranty, but usually it's just one year), and a decent new laptop would start at around $500--but you could spend a lot more. If you're willing to spend the cash, I'd say go for a new laptop. They'll have 3-4gb of RAM and double the hard drive space or more. Plus windows 7 instead of Vista. Back to school deals are starting soon, too.

Is your laptop adequate before the failure? If so then just replace the hard drive. If you think your laptop is lacking before the hard drive failure, then get a new laptop.

If it was ok for your needs get a new drive. They're quite cheap. I had a laptop that broke and rather than get a new one I got a desktop instead. It's a lot more powerful and more bang for my buck compared to a laptop. I used my laptop for university as well, but mine has quite a few public computers for students to use so I didn't feel much of a loss as long as I brought a memory stick with me.

I was thinking about buying a new one before this one crashed. The only thing I'm going to miss with this laptop is my 50 or so LRRcasts, everything else can go fuck itself.
