So there have been rumors of new consoles coming very very soon this generation. With Nintendo working on the NX, Sony confirming that the PS4.5 is a real thing, and finally with Microsoft coming up with the more powerful Xbox One S Or XBoneS. The announcement basically confirms what everyone already knew, this latest generation has been a huge waste of time. None of the consoles, Ps4, Xbone, WiiU, could stand up to the powerhouse of PC gaming, and since every console seems to force useless multimedia features, it was clear that releasing underpowered machines was a mistake especially considering the rise of decent VR.
On paper the new XBoneS seems like a good thing. It's smaller, more powerful, supports 4k video, and has a bigger hard drive. Yet the problem falls under Microsoft's timing. You see, we don't know shit about what Sony or Nintendo are putting into their systems yet. And Microsoft jumping the gun this early only gives power to the other companies, allowing them to adjust their system specs to ensure that they have the far more powerful units.
It has been rumored that the Nintendo NX has been pushed back to make the console more powerful and supportive of VR, and we already know that the new Playstation unit is going to be strong enough to handle the Playstation VR, what we don't know is just how much stronger this XBoneS is going to be. One could assume that Microsoft would want to support Occulus at very least, since the VR headset already ships with a Xbox controller, but there has been no indication of this as of yet.
Not to mention it doesn't even look like Microsoft itself has any faith in their console. Almost everything announced at E3 that is supposed to be "exclusive" to the console, also is coming to the Windows 10 store. Which begs the question, why the fuck would anyone want an Xbox? Especially when it is, yet again, likely to be the weakest machine on the market.
To me it seems like Microsoft panicked. They knew that Sony and Nintendo were working on bigger, badder, boxes, and they rushed to get this one out. New console be damned, they still gave people no reason to want to buy one. No set exclusives, no promises of VR power, and who cares about 4K support? The biggest baddest PC's on the market still have a hard time keep 4K gaming at a high stable frame rate, and there is no way in hell that consoles are going to have that kind of power. Give me 1080p at 60fps and then we can talk.
Oh well, I guess Microsoft will be leaving the console market soon enough. I'd say that they are rapidly becoming SEGA, but let's face it Microsoft isn't going anywhere. They are too dominate in the PC market for that to happen. But I would imagine that they will soon start putting more focus into PC gaming, rather than trying to keep competing against Nintendo and Sony. Makes me happy because I would have to buy their shitty consoles anymore.
TL;DR I don't think Microsoft was smart to reveal their system first. I think they did it because the Xbone isn't selling well as it stands now and have to do something to try and make a come back. Except it puts Sony and Nintendo in the perfect position to shoot Microsoft down because now they know what benchmarks they'll have to beat.
