i think most of the gamers today have a steam account. me too, and i really love steam. but there's one thing that i hate: i have 2 or 3 games which are not on steam. and i thought, why are there games which aren't on steam? it would be awesome if you can see really every game from your friends in their steam lists. in my opinion, steam should be standard, it installs itself when you install your OS or whatever. what do you think about that?
Everything you mentioned could be created without having to make Steam a monopoly, which is obviously a bad thing even if it ran by one of the best companies out there.

What we could have instead is:
1. A small, independent group of developers should form solely for the purpose of creating a universal social network for all PC games (consoles would be near impossible because of competition/rivalry). This third party program could perform the same roles that steam does, except sales of games, but allowing all games to be integrated with it.

2. Developers could pay a small fee in order to allow their games to run in with this software, paying for development and maintenance costs while making ensuring a social network for their games (something that is becoming more and more important).

3. ???

4. Profit.
something like that would be great.
Ever hear of Xfire? It is a free gaming social network that works with vertually all PC games. There is also a very large user base. They also have a digital distribution system.

No, I love steam, but competition is always needed.
I do agree, the hegemony of one content delivery platform could turn many people to the dark side.

No. It should be just how it is, not everyone likes it, but those who do enjoy it tremendously.
exactly.

I agree I have been using steam for years and have collected a large amount of games on steam(mostly due to the insane deals on steam and how easy it makes it when i want to play a old game so i dont have to go looking for disks). If a games not on steam i dont buy it. Although a monopoly is a bad thing it would be a good idea to make steam more standerd it gets rid of the trouble of DRM.

Should? They do already, if you ask me. Under every rule some peasants don't realize who's in charge, shaping their very lives. This is no different. Wake up and smell the ashes.

No, but only because there should never exist a monopoly in anything. Think about the game, Monopoly; when you have majority of the board, you don't even have to work to win and make money. The same goes for the gaming world. If Valve ruled everything, they would no longer have to try. We would no longer get innovating features, good customer service, or wicked games. Monopolies should not exist, and although I love Steam and Valve, Valve should not have a monopoly. Competition is the best thing for gaming.

No. I am not for or against steam, but no company should ever monopolize the market, regardless of which market in question it is.

Well, let me put it this way:

Valve= What God gave us because Jesus wasn't ready for the second coming.
Steam= A convenient way to download, update, and manage all manner of games from across the years.
Monopoly= FUCK NO.

Valve and Steam are both boss, but a monopoly is always a bad thing in a capitalist environment. As much as it might make sense from a certain poit of view, there has to be competition.
So no, in a word.

I detest using Steam so I really don't want it to have a monopoly on the gaming scene. It's not like it does anything useful at all, and putting a DVD into the DVD tray of my computer is not all that big of a hassle. I would much rather have the freedom to install what I want when I want without a connection to the internet that is required by steam games. I also don't give a damn about all the fake achievements on steam that they put there to try and make you feel like you are actually doing something productive. Finally I resent the fact that you need to open the goddamn program every time you want to play a game that was downloaded on steam.

Let's look at the facts shall we?
Valve = Evil.
Digital Distribution = Evil.
A digital distribution platform that Valve runs and profits from = The greatest threat to gaming there is.
It must be stopped.
I'm confused, are the 'facts' on the otherside of your paranoid views of the world? Or perhaps your first question was a non-sequiter with your cute little list? Maybe this is a new form of sarcasm? Because, that all looks like roughly the opposite of correct.

no but for the right reasons.

Not all pc users are gamers. however I am open to manufacturers putting it on simply as an advertisement as long as they don't use it as an excuse to raise the price. In this way they could configure steam so it would not take forever to start up on shitty computers. The makers of the OS themselves would not do this or one of them wouldn't (looking at you Micro$oft) but Apple might, since they could gain ground in the OS market again and their computers would look less anti gaming.

The US government would break it up. I would not advise steam to go over 80% of the market if they want to avoid getting split in half by the government, or getting in some serious legal trouble.

I don't have a Steam account myself, and I don't feel tempted by it. It doesn't really stock games I'm interested in that I can't get on my PS3, plus I think it looks fugly and it seems to get all prima donna on me whenever I try and load it up.

That said, I'm loving Steam right now- my husband can play online with his buddies, buy fucktons of games on the cheap and rebuild a library of old classics which he has long since lost/destroyed the disks for.

I think it's weird to say it should be a standard though- aren't many of us getting sick of standard OS features like Windows and the like? We're all different, like different things, and have different demands- Steam, along with everything else, is no more likely to make EVERYONE happy than anything else.

And why would I care what games my friend bought?

I really don't want to see physical media go away. Then again, I just have to walk into a retailer and see the walls covered with games to be reassured that the death of physical media has been greatly exagerated. At least for the time being.

It would be awesome if Steam was compatible with all games but I wouldn't want it to be necessary.

Hell no. I want physical copies of games all the time, not to take 5 hours to download it. I also hate running games through Steam, mainly with Call of Duty as it randomly disconnects me for no reason.

I was very negative to Steam when I first started using it. Mostly because I had no interest in the community aspect, and an intense hatred for forced software.

But it's definitely grown on me. Still don't use the community, but the prices are good, downloads take full advantage of my connection, and everything is neatly organized and easily set-up. Not to mention you don't have to go searching for patches for every game.

So the way I see it, Steam is the best program of it's kind and should be treated as such.
