Should we be more serious?

Had a slow day at work today which always results in me reading the newspaper and getting pissed at the editorials when i started to wonder about what is important to me. With so many political figures gunning to restrict our favorite pasttime, should we quit dicking around so much and start caring about something that could affect us?

i know...its just video games right? But everytime there is a shooting involving anyone from 15-30 years old, the papers are flooded with people blaming video gaming (hollywood has taken a backseat somewhere along the line) and some of these people are state representatives and various other degrees of influencial leaders.

maybe i'm overreacting and being paranoid..but i would hate to see the day when something i've been doing for 20 years gets restricted and we all just sit back and grumble to ourselves instead of acting like adults (those of us who actually are adults that is) and defending something we actually enjoy.

No, they only ban games in places like India and Germany, and I gather Australia as well. So unless you live there then you have nothing to worry about.
They blamed music for everything before videogames, it'll pass.

Well, it's worth it to take stock. As long as it's something you're passionate about, you'll probably be able to continue it, what with the large base of gamers making up a modest portion of economic income. I'd say we'll all be fine, barring some catastrophe. So, just chill back, pop a drink, and work your thumbs out as a pasttime to dealing with the heavier stuff, like whether to order Soup or Salad as an appetizer.

They tried to do the same thing to jazz, pinball, comic books, and D & D. That's just of the top of my head. All the controversy will dies off once the younger generation grows up on video games.

Speaking of which. Assuming we don't escape the trap, what do you think we will rally against when get older?

Games don't get "banned" as such in Australia they are just deemed to high of a classification but there are barely any games that get banned completely as the developers will tweak it slightly so it works with Australia's system.

Didn't people say this about, Television, Cinema, Jazz Music and rock n roll?

I tried being serious once, it just wasn't funny.

Hysteria is hysteria and people always want scapegoats. As someone who has just spent the weekend murdering zombies and has never raised a finger against anyone in her life, I have more than enough grounds to call bullshit.

To have an eloquent and well researched argument is easy enough to do, appealing to common sense is enough to develop a rebuttal for the video game critics, but considering the fact that we're pissing and moaning on a forum instead of writing a scathing letter to our local paper, I'd say that we really don't give enough of a toss for that kind of action.

my biggest problem with the whole thing is that i can see the point of all finger pointing to a degree. whenever i go to buy a game magazine at a store, i always find it in the kids section, despite the fact that most of the good ones contain a fair amount of cussing and gore these days. brought the magazine up to the manager and told them it belonged somewhere else on the racks and he moved it at once.

i don't mean that we should go on a campaign or anything..but if we wanna stop getting hassled, maybe we should try to help keep certain games out of the hands of kids. i've seen ads for violent games in sports illustrated for kids and other magazines for a demographic that isn't old enough for the game and i believe that it hurts us more than anything.

that isn't all the stuff i'm thinking of...but it would help a bit.

As well as comic books and the sixties.
Or if we'd really take it back, proper books. The kind that's literature now.
Well, proper books or Catcher in the Rye if you don't feel like going back too far in time.

It's nice to know that feminism has resulted in the final eradication of misogyny.

Seriousness has its place, both in gaming and the real world. Should all things be serious? Hell no, that'd be absolutely devastating. Should some things be serious? Yes. If they aren't then many things slip between the cracks.

The media needs to grow up and stop looking for the sensationalist view of anything that ever happens. The same is true of the public.

Its doubtful, unless you live in australia...then youre just shit out of luck. What do you mean by more serious exactly? Serious about video games? Isnt that a bit of a oxymora? Either way, calm down its nothing to worry about...unles youre australian.
Or German ;)

And Americans are so hyped about freedom of speech, their unlikely to ever get serious measures against gaming into law. Over here in UK-land there is no real figure of anti-gaming - about the nearest we've ever has was Keith Vaz, MP for Leicester - but frankly, he's abit of a nobody, moreso since the MP expenses claims where announced. And the BBFC is really very mild about banning stuff - in the last 10 yers, only Manhunt 2 was banned, but thats not unique to us. Before that, Carmagdon, I think - but they eventually gave up on that.

As for the rest of Europe, I'm not sure, but I think we're pretty liberal.

We need balance. People who are always or never serious are bad. Always serious people tend to be inclined to over-reacting and being ignorant. Never serious people tend to be useless, clueless, and...also ignorant.

If gaming becomes something more than simple scapegoat for untill after current teens grow up and get to the power, and if someone tries to turn videogame industry into brual authoritarian dictatorship, remember three simple words.

RISE!
RESIST!
REVOLT!

I think people that play violent video games ares less likely to shoot people..

Yea, you heard.

My reason for saying this is they take out there frustrations in the game.
