Ever liked someones comment but not quite enough to quote it? or maybe you just couldn't be bothered to think of a reply ... just kinda "this good but brain no nothing to say" or "say whaaaaaa... pffft .. this guy is soooooo lucky that my finger be tired"

I've always craved a thumbs system on the escapist ... and have it so only gone gonzos or whatever can vote, just so that the trolls can't ... you know ... be trolls

does anyone think a thumbs system would be a good idea? i think it'd be cool to check my comments for quick easy feedback on what people in general thought of my comment.

also if you like the idea ... should the system let you know who gave you the thumbs up/down?

... almost 3am, bored and i thought i'd just get this out there :p

tell me about it ... or sometimes it's just that people mean to be nice but inadvertantly end up insulting the very person they were trying to be nice to (human interaction would be alot less confusing at times if we took the words away lol)

sometimes a nice thumbs up can be alot better than words .. sounds silly but it can also avoid arguments

No. Every forum I've ever seen use them has, inevitably, abused them.

And I honestly don't think the majority of these forums needs this. Sure, I get a bit bummed out when I don't get quoted, especially when the post is SOLID GOLD, but...

...

Fuck it. Lets get some thumbs in this *****.

yeah, straight up! putting your time and effort into a post then having it get no recognition SUCKS! ... i'd take at least a thumbs up if i don't get quoted :p

People have abused +'s and thumb systems in other forums but all that means is that the system for this one needs to be on point.

It's just a little broken guys ... it's not a bad system :p

No thanks. We don't need it. There isn't anything it would add, it would be pointless.

Pretty much what I was typing out before I got distracted by TV the decided to refresh to see if someone had already said it. XD

And to add a little bit more, as for the idea of being told who gave you a thumbs up/down, if a system like this was ever to be implemented...the amount of work the Mods would have would probably triple as arguments and petty complaining would break out on threads. It would just turn into a giant argument. :p

Plus it could also lead to ego problems too, with said user thinking because he's got more thumbs up then anyone else, he's suddenly "Teh bestest Escapist evar!" and act like s/he is above the rules and "Hot shit" about the site. And this site already has a small problem with egos.

I say nay to the Roman Nay/Hay system as well. For above mentions of abuse and being unnecessary.

Pretty much this. It's a nice idea, but it think the cons outweigh the pros. Anyways, the forums are great as is, so don't fix what ain't broke.

It's pointless to those who don't want to use it and pointful to those who do.
So
Why not? How could it really be abused for anyone to care?

Having it appeases to some while other can ignore it.

No. It's open for abuse, and only letting a certain amount of people use them ultimately removes the point. What if someone with 10 posts wants to vote it up or down? Not to mention if someone annoys a group, now everyone of his/her posts is thumbed down just on principle.
It's a flawed system already, and limiting to only certain people is a worse way of handling it.

Thumbs up.

Oh, wait, you mean with the forum keeping track of it? Um...hmm...I guess you can experiment using this thread. Every time someone quotes you and says thumbs up, you edit your original post to keep track of it?

I like it on other forums, and I think it would go a long way to promote good posts, and shut up the remaining 95% of the posts on these forums.

Support.

I can imagine that...

Commenter A: (insert witty comment here) X thumbs up, Y thumbs down.

Commenter B: (quotes witty comment) Y people deserve to be Z(z=punishment)

Do you want us to devolve into YOUTUBE?! Think, man!

I think that Escapist is big enough to avoid abuse, but small enough to avoid other kinds of abuse.

As in it's big enough it would be hard to get together a cabal to downvote people you don't like, but it's small enough that people aren't going to sockpuppet just for ratings.

I like the idea because I've found that social context and feedback in online forums make people more civil. There's an inintended psychological feedback thing that starts going on, people improve the quality and coherency of their posts and their attitudes as well because seeing a huge number of downvotes is demoralizing.

Short answer: No.

Long answer: Noooooooooooooooooo.

This would rank posts, and then profiles by extension, by popularity. Look at Youtube and ThatGuyWithTheGlasses, whenever someone has an opinion that's even somewhat outside of the norm, they get nuked with thumbs down signs. Hell, people on TGWTG have taken to thumbs downing the first comment on every video just because a few people kept typing "FIRST!!!" It seriously does not matter what people put in that first post, it gets down-voted just for being the first. Likewise, people will click the thumbs up button just because the poster asked them to.

So no, it's a largely unnecessary system that inevitably gets abused.

TL;DR:
