Show Creator Begs Rockstar to Make Sons of Anarchy Game

The creator of Sons of Anarchy ran to Twitter to get his game idea made.

I haven't seen the FX show Sons of Anarchy, but I know it's about motorcycle enthusiasts in a California town and that Hellboy Ron Perlman is a cast member. Even with such passing knowledge of the content of the show - and the fact that it's the most highly rated show on the cable network FX - kind of makes it perfect for a licensed videogame. The creator and show runner of Sons of Anarchy Kurt Sutter thinks so too, and he took to Twitter this week to publicly plead with Rockstar, makers of Grand Theft Auto, to make such a game.

"@RockstarGames you should make the SOA game," Sutter said. "I know it's an expensive/complicated process, but let's chat, see if we can make it happen."

That message has been removed from Sutter's Twitter feed, even though it is still accessible by a direct link [https://twitter.com/sutterink/statuses/263651544887599106]. Whether that's because he thought twice about making such a public request or because Rockstar contacted him, only Sutter can tell.

It seems Sutter is committed to making a videogame starring his biker gang, but as late as this August negotiations with a major game publisher had reached their conclusion. "Getting no traction on the SOA game. Looks like our big publisher blew us off," Sutter wrote on August 11th [https://twitter.com/sutterink/status/234325145974607872]. "Not a priority at FX. I doubt [the game] will happen."

The thing is, Sutter has a good idea and he's chasing the right developer. Rockstar has made licensed games in the past, and made them well. The Warriors was one of my favorite games from the last generation, and it stayed very true to the cult movie of the same title. I'm sure Rockstar and parent company Take-Two Interactive aren't looking for new projects with the New York-based studio working on GTAV - they are probably in crunch mode to get it ready for a Spring release [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/120404-Grand-Theft-Auto-V-Claims-Official-Release-Window] after so many delays - but I would certainly trust them to make a Sons of Anarchy game.

Even if such a game never materializes, Sutter's got to be happy with how his show is doing. The fifth season is airing now and the premiere in September had 7.5 million viewers. Not bad for a cable show. [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/109377-HBO-Renews-Game-of-Thrones-for-Second-Season]

Whatever happened to Rockstar's "Ride To Hell" open-world biker game anyway?

I remember it getting a big feature in Gamesmaster a few years ago, then nothing.

If I remember correctly, Fox sued Take-Two for pursuing a Grand Theft Auto film because Fox owned the rights to that name in terms of film, because they released a movie by the same name with Ron Howard way back when. It'd be interesting to see if Fox would allow Sutter to take SOA to Rockstar for a game release, which would be humorously ironic.

Wasn't some Rockstar branch working on "Ride to Hell", which was supposed to be pretty much exactly this?

Ninja'd.

Done some research. Apparently, the Dead Island people are (were?) working on it (Deep Silver).

Surely Lost and the Damned was pretty much Sons of Anarchy anyways? Motorbike Club, rivalry between the old guard and the newer members and so on.

This could work mainly because damn near every episode has them doing some GTA like mission. In the first episode they burn down a rival MC's warehouse, steal back their guns and find a link to another gang who tried to screw them. Apart from the motorcycle gang part, hell in some cases there is an MC in a GTA game, thats pretty much exactly like a GTA mission. And its not like they build up to doing something for a whole series no they always do this kinda stuff. I say go for it, and Jax would make a great main character since he is the only one in the show who isn't a vindictive bastard (apart from Opie). Thankfully the show realises that and doesn't try to empathise the audience with any of the dickheads like Clay or Jax's ***** mum.

If they do a SoA video game (yes please) It should really be about Clay and John tellers rise and the tragic fallout of their friendship. It's a grey area in the show. AND with John teller as the protagonist it would make it a globe trotting adventure from Charming California to Dublin Ireland, and his slow realization that what he's made isn't at all what he envisioned. then again it would not have as much choice for crazy rampages because John Tellers antics have to make sense with the character he left behind in the show. You couldn't simply have him as a dangerous sociopath like Nico of GTA IV.

Didn't they already pretty much do this, but it was called Lost and the Damned. Not that I'm complaning, more Lost and the Damned taking place somewhere other than totally-not-NYC would be awesome.

Fuck yeah, you nailed it. Would love to see that prequel played out in a video game!

"with the New York-based studio working on GTAV"

Good article, just to nitpick though, Rockstar North (the studio developing GTAV) are actually based in Edinburgh, Scotland.
