This is one of my favorite game genres, and I really wanna play more games done in this style. So far, outside the genre namesakes, I've played Cave Story and Outland.

Can you guys show me to your favorite Metroidvania games/other good Metroidvanias?

EDIT: A "Metroidvania" is a subgenre of action-adventure games popularized by Metroid and later on by Castlevania: Symphony of the Night. They're known for being 2d platforming games with action and heavy exploration elements that include backtracking and gradual character progression by way of weapons/RPG level systems.

Sorry for the confusion!

Shadow Complex I believe is what you're looking for.
Except it is a shooter with the ability to shoot into the background, it is done great with a Metroid style backtracking feel to it.

An Untitled Story and Bunny Must Die are two indie Metroidvanias that come to mind.

Yes Iji Play it, love it.
It has great music, truely awesomne weapons, a suprisingly subtle moralty system and best of all, it's completely free!

For those that were as confused as I was.

Super Metroid is by far my favorite if that counts (this term is new to me), I looooooove just how much exploration there is. Some might say that hiding the passage to a required boss that gives an essential powerup dickishly behind a hidden missile block was a douche move. And they would be right. And I still love it <3

Believe it or not, Batman Arkham Asylum. I know it's not a 2-d side-scroller, but all the same gameplay elements are there. You find a hidden room but you can't seem to get to it? That's because you don't have the right tool yet. Can't kill this enemy with your current tool? Try this tool instead. Same kind of dealio as in the Metroid games. Not to mention IT'S F***ING BATMAN!!!!

I've beaten Arkham Asylum but never made this connection! I've been overdue for a replay of that game, too...Man was it awesome.

I just got it at gamestop for like 20 bucks. they were having some super duper sale recently. Playing it on hard now. That Game is RAD! (boss fights were a bit too simple though. Only concern for me.....)
