I don't think people choose fantasy avatars to hide their faces, nor do I think they do it because they are ashamed of themselves. Avatars are a good way to show your interests and sense of humor to the world. In turn, they also help you identify other netizens of like interests. (Making friends? In MY interwebs!?)
For example, I chose this avatar because a) I think it's neat looking, and b) I think the King in Yellow is a pretty cool guy (and eh doesn't afraid of anything, etc). That'll probably tell you much more about me than a picture of my face.
