I am just installing (with wine) this game after buying it. I have played it before and it one of my favourite games, but not the alien crossfire thing which I have. So post your favourite faction and possible strategies for me to use.

Don't you hate it when X11 crashes? D:

Is the wine part important?

OT: I've never played it so I don't know. What are YOUR favorite factions and strategies. Is the game worth it? Sell it to me.

SMAC is a the sequel to Civ 2, it is in space and I find is the best Civ game to date. Wine is important because I want to install it without an emulated windows computer.

My favourite Faction is the Gians, because they have very spammable units

Ha! That wine lol. I thought you meant alcohol. Brain fart of the week right there. I started with Civ III so I don't really know anything about Civ II. I assume it's pretty much the same (at least the basics). No? Yes?

Pretty much, but SMAC is better XD. I don't drink wine really, beer and spirits for me.

I bought it way back in 2001 or so when I read a glowing PC Gamer review of it (if I'm not mistaken, it's the highest rating they've ever awarded to a game - aside from Half-Life 2 and the original Crysis - at 98%). I was never able to get into it, but I still have it stored away somewhere. Guess Civ games aren't my thing.

AC is the best Civ game of all time and one of the best 4X games ever made. Not only are the game's mechanics ahead of any other Civ game (seriously, the terraforming options alone put most games to shame), it's filled with tons of little things that all add up and make it a memorable experience. The awesome and often sinister secret projects, the awesome quotes when new research is uncovered, the presence of an actual plot...

The game is not only a great strategy game, but also a thoughtful exploration of the many possible futures mankind might go down, both from an ideological perspective as well as a biological one, which makes it a great piece of science fiction as well.

Favourite faction? Chairmain Yang and the Hive! Why? They ignore efficiency penalties. This essentially means they can run Planned and Police State without any drawbacks, turning them into a powerhouse. Other than that, Zakharov and the University because research focused factions always rule in 4X games.

Though I'm not sure I like the expansion. The new factions just never fit in for me. Some were redundant (yet another "green" faction), some were terrible (Drones, Data Angels), some were gamebreaking (Nautilus, the two Alien factions) and none of them fit in and they all wound up feeling out of place...

I'm a research whole, so I tend to go for factions that allow you to get overpowered early on.

I remember going against the 'space Chinese', its been a while, with AC's version of 'end game' weapons while they were still using space forks.
Still took me a damn long time to kill all their freaking troops and take over their cities.

If you dig AC, you should check out 'GalCiv 2'.

The storyline really pulls you in. When one of Gaia's Assistances dies. I felt it. I got angry.

give up that ill logical and ill tempered right side , join the consciousness!

i like the pirates to.

build a line of cities going North south , terraform the right hand outer squares of all to 3k+ the centre nine to 2k+ and the the outer left ones to 1k+ drill aquifers in the high corners , make cities along the western seaboard raising the land so as little as possibble is see, make all the lowland cities forested production centres and all the high up cities massive energy collectors, dig boreholes all along the barren eastern fringe use the supply crawlers as both a radar net and have each one bringing in energy/turn to whichever is your main science town.

Interesting, I'll give it a shot in the morning.

Yep, I consider SMAC to be Sid Meier's/ Firaxis' best game ever, not only that, but I think it is the best turn based strategy ever conceived for the computer. (I think Metacritic has my back on this too, for once)

My favorite faction would be University, I play moderate aggression where I will try and wipe out Spartans and Believers fairly early on if I can, but my main goal early in the game is to sprawl a large territory and research my ass off.

And like someone else said, GalCiv 2 is a great game too, though not as balanced and the campaign is rather bonkers. The AI is fucked up too. But it's still very good.
Is it worth having boreholes? I usually end up covering the planet in Forrest and getting the planet bonuses

I usually ran Zakharov myself, too. Pure defensive playstyle with moderate expansion, the mandatory early run-in with Miriam, and then minding my own tech until the endgame where I am far ahead enough to race to Ascension without much of a problem, if all else fails I can planet bust up the entire surface as well.

If I feel especially evil, I also wage terraforming wars by making mountain ridges to my benefit and my enemy's harm - say goodbye to all your lovely rainfall, Santiago, it's all mine now.

I like playing as the Gaians and Morgans.

Weird I know but I kinda like playing the underdog and fighting my way to the top.

And both factions have several natural disadvantages that normally result in them being wiped out by the AI as the AI.

Interface is a bit old and clunky, but it's still one of the best Civ games I've ever played. And it has an actual plot. I almost always play as Zak. If I spawn next to that ***** Miriam I make it my singular goal to nerve gas her into the grave and butcher each and every one of her citizens. If not I rapidly expand and then turtle until I get locust, then I can steamroll everyone. I really wish the expansion pack was on GOG, some of the new factions are silly but I want to try playing as the Free Drones.

i stumbled across alpha years ago and to me it is the best game ive ever played!
no other game lets you strategically morph your factions society, economy, technology, and you can ring up the other world leaders and be diplomatic!

i usually play sparton or gaia

I love Alpha Centauri, best strategy game out there I think, some of the strategies you can do in that game can surprise you, bit of advice, toying with elevation when terraforming places can really be worth it.

I pirated Alien Crossfire since it seems impossible to a feasible copy and I currently lack a credit card, it adds quite a bit, I'd recommend it.

But really guys, what make's SMAC so great has to be all the quotes thrown in, right? Was I the only one sold on the game because of the quotes you get when discover a new technology or build a Secret Project?
Sold out software are selling the complete game, you can also buy it off eBay, they is a guy selling it off.

"As the Americans learned so painfully in Earth's final century, free flow of information is the only safeguard against tyranny. The once-chained people whose leaders at last lose their grip on information flow will soon burst with freedom and vitality, but the free nation gradually constricting its grip on public discourse has begun its rapid slide into despotism. Beware of he who would deny you access to information, for in his heart he dreams himself your master." - Commissioner Pravin Lal, "U.N. Declaration of Rights" That is my favourite quote
