The people over at dorkly are running another reader voted contest. This time, it's Greatest Videogame Sidekick. Right now their top 5 are:

1. Epona
2. Luigi
3. Yoshi
4. Weighted Companion Cube
5. Garrus Vakarian

And for those wondering, Murray from Monkey Island doesn't even crack the top 50. That is a sin for which I will never forgive the video game community for. The people would rather have an inanimate object, rather than the single greatest talking skull ever. Truly, a sad day. Who's your favorite, Escapist?

I don't know about everyone else, but I've played Portal and haven't played Monkey Island.

Anyway, this is "sidekick of all time", not "of the year", which would make it a very amusing list considering none of those sidekicks were in games released this year; Only three of them were in games released last year (two of which were from the same game).

Also, "Planetscape"? Lulz.

Out of the top five, I'll have to with either the Companion Cube or Garrus. Personally, I'd have a hard time choosing between Garrus, Tali, or HK-47 from Knights of the Old Republic.

Is Dorkly basically a console site? This is the 2nd reader poll I've seen from there that has essentially nothing but console or cross platform results.

No Murray?!? HK-47 or Clank not even in the top 10?!? That's it!

OT: Judging by the above statement, I think you can take a stab at my favorites. :p

The Monkey Island series is pretty much the pinnacle of the humorous adventure fad that ran through the 90s (and I'll argue that with anyone looking to tout Day of the Tentacle or Grim Fandango). It's the gold standard for humorous writing in video games in my opinion. And out of all of the hilarious characters, Murray's one of 'em.

Oh, I know that.

I've just never been a huge fan of adventure games, and I doubt I'm the only one.

"Adventure Game Logic" was something my young mind could never comprehend, and now that I'm older the mechanics are too clunky for my spoiled modern gamer perception to enjoy handling. The Walking Dead was adventure-game-lite and even in that I was constantly wondering why I couldn't start running, or at least move at a slow jog.

Psh, Sam & Max: Hit the Road is my favourite comedy adventure game. Everything from the deadpan delivery to the insane characters and wacky plot tickle my funny bone like few others...

Oh, speaking of which, Max is one of the best sidekick ever as well. That crazed langomorph bunny thing steals my heart every time I see him on screen.
