It isn?t often that I have had high expectations for a film and have come out pleasantly surprised that my expectations have been reached. Lord of the Rings: Return of the King was a film that did just that, but that was in 2003! I would say The Dark Knight reached my expectations, but to be honest, before the film came out I was sceptical of Heath Ledger being The Joker. Don?t ask why, I just thought that people deemed ?pretty boys? by society shouldn?t be picked to play insane, scene stealing characters like The Joker. But Ledger was amazing, and was easily the best Joker next to Mark Hamill, even though Hamill only voiced the Clown Prince of Crime. Still, he was awesome in the animated series, and also in Arkham Asylum.

I shall now get to my Kick Ass review. I do tend to rant a lot. Sid will do that now.

I didn?t know this was based on a comic book the first time I saw the trailer, and was pleasantly surprised when I realised this. Nicolas Cage in another comic book film? Everyone hated Ghost Rider, and I don?t know why! It was dark, admittedly corny in places but I really enjoyed it. The CGI skull did piss me off, but who cares? It was a good film, in my opinion. And I am the reviewer. So my opinion counts and yours does not. Get used to it. The film is focussed more on him and the character of Hit-Girl, played by Chloe Moretz, and for me that actually made the film better than if it was focussed on Aaron Johnson?s Dave Lizewski aka Kick-Ass. Kick-Ass is an appealing character, and I like how he isn?t like the superheroes in comics, such as Spider-Man (which he bares more than a passing resemblance to). I swear the street he lives on is the same one that is in the web-slinger?s film too!

OK, that was a bit of a rant, sorry about that. Here is the synopsis and shizzle that SHOULD start off a review. Also sorry for the pun in the title. I know it?s been used everywhere, but it?s the only one that CAN be used for this film.

So does it rock? Indeed it does. It?s about a guy who one day ponders what it would be like to be a superhero, after he becomes fed up of him and his friend getting mugged by two thugs, one played by Giovanni Ribisi, who was also in Avatar and played Phoebe?s half-brother Frank in Friends. He buys a green wetsuit off the internet and decides to fight back against these muggers?but gets stabbed and, whilst stumbling in pain, gets hit by a car. Months later, he is out of hospital with many metal plates and an enhanced resistance to pain, and so decides to fight crime?unsuccessfully, but becomes an internet phenomenon in the process. He is soon tracked down by Big Daddy (Nicolas Cage, redeeming himself after the National Treasure films) and Hit Girl (Chloe Moretz, who is probably the best actress in the entire film). He is soon caught up in Big Daddy?s fight against Frank D?Amico (Mark Strong, carrying on his bad guy role since Sherlock Holmes, which I thoroughly enjoyed), and must help the crime-fighting duo in bringing down the lumber yard owner.

The film is insane. Seriously. It doesn?t take itself too seriously, and the action scenes contain some of the craziest deaths you will ever see. I won?t ruin anything for you, as you have to see these fight scenes for them to be believed; it?s just manic. All the fighting is down to Hit Girl and Big Daddy, quite possibly the best duo since Batman and Robin?except they don?t wear the god awful nipple suit or what would probably be used in role play by Graham Norton, also known as Robin?s outfit. If they ever bring Robin into the new Batman films, I may just throw myself off a bridge. To make my death ironic, I shall do it in a Robin costume, as he should die. Kick Ass takes a back seat for a lot of the film, as he gets ass-kicked a LOT (see what I did there? God, I?m so witty). Which is for the best, really. No offence to the character, but he isn?t a successful crime fighter. If the film was just about him it would only be about half an hour long. Saying that, it?s about that length to where he gets hospitalised. Which brings me onto the next topic, which is a criticism.

My only real criticism of the film is that it does drag in some parts. From when he is hospitalised to his first successful kicking of arse, the film is kinda dull. It?s just him training up until that point and getting close to the girl of his dreams in a way that I did not see coming whatsoever, and it is indeed hilarious. Considering the girl of his dreams is Katie Deauxma (Lyndsy Fonseca, in such TV shows as How I Met Your Mother and Desperate Housewives), and she is HOT, who can blame him? He sees her in the nude, for Christ?s sake! The film, I believe, is just trying to fill the gap between fight scenes when it goes down the dullness route, but they are developing the characters at the same time, so they deserve credit for that. How the hell would they have developed the characters anyway? Hit Girl giving a speech in the middle of a fight about how she hasn?t had a childhood? Thank God they didn?t go emo on our arses.

This film does indeed kick ass. It?s hilarious and action packed, has a unique feel and has a great feel to it. I want a sequel, and the ending of this definitely sets the scene for one. It is also quite sad in one place especially, and I know people who actually cried in this scene. Comic book films don?t do that. If a film makes you laugh one minute then express emotion the next, then you know you?ve paid to go see the right film. Never have I laughed so much at death, and never have I come out of the cinema feeling satisfied at the movie I paid to see. Well, I was satisfied at Return of the King, but that was 7 years ago. Just see this movie!
