Hey all,

I'll be in London with school next week but I've got lots of free time to stroll around the city on my own. For those of you who've been there or are from there, are there any sights, shops or the like that I should really see while I'm there? I'm kind of on the lookout for the more nerdy stuff like cool stores or something. :)

Forbidden planet is supposed to be pretty good. I've never been myself, but it seems like a shop I could spend hours in.

Go to trocodero it's just outside the picadilly circus station, forbidden planet is also good. Other than that check out some of the museums or something.

Definatley take a trip to Camden. You need a few hours to see everything there, but it's just so awesome, I try to get up there once a year.

The Imperial War Museum is pretty cool aswell.

Oh, and definatley avoid Madame Teussauds, you'll have to queue for an 3 hours and sell your soul to get in. So not worth it.

Go off the beaten path a lil' bit, I'm sure you'll see the Eye, Buckingham Palace, Big Ben etc etc with your school over the week. It's the largest city in Europe, so I'm sure you'll find something awesome just by wandering.

Question, you say you'll have lots of time free, but what time would this be? Morning, Afternoon, Evening? It could make a massive difference.

Ah, yes. I've got two afternoons and one evening to myself.

Well the Parliament, candy shops, and that giant Ferris wheel thing is about the only sightseeing.

Don't bother with Buckingham Palace (or if you do, just walk by it on the way to Trafalgar Square or something, there is really nothing to get excited about there) or Madam Tussauds (you queue for hours to see models of people you wouldn't be fussed about seeing in real life).

Keeping in mind that London has free entry to all museums and galleries, I'd recommend:
Camden Lock Market
Tate Modern, National Gallery, National Portrait Gallery, Saachi Gallery*
Natural History Museum (best museum in London imo) and Science Museum (right next door)
Have a wonder through the West End because, even if you're not big into shopping, its still good to go and see Oxford Street, Picadilly Circus, Trafalgar Square, Covent Garden, Hyde Park (and Speakers Corner), just by walking between these places you will find tonnes of interesting stuff to do. Similarly, have a wonder along the Embankment

I'm sorry if these suggestions aren't really "off the beaten track" but there is a reason why they are the most visited areas in London.

*even if you are not into art (modern or otherwise), these are all still definately worth a look. If you hate Modern Art, I'd still say go to the Tate Modern and Saachi Gallery, because they can be eye opening and the Saachi Gallery is provocative if nothing else

This guy, I think has the best suggestions, even though chances are you'll be seeing at least a few of these places with your group. But yeah, going to the West End is a good idea. Lotsa shops and it's generally an...interesting place to be.

I disagree with the Museum bit, mind. The British Museum (the country's main history museum with lots of Egyptian, Roman, Ancient Greek artifacts ect.) is my personal favourite, followed by the Science Museum (self explanatory) and Natural History Museum (dinosaurs ftw). But as with all museums in the UK, they're all free entry so you'd be a fool to not spend an afternoon in one of them or one of the galleries (again, if you're not going there with your group).

Never been to Camden Lock Market, but I hear good things about it, Covent Garden is a cool little place too if you're looking to chill out for a bit and watch some street performers.

Just remember to keep an eye on the time, time seems to go about 3x times faster in London than the rest of the country, for some reason.

EDIT: Just did a quick Google search and on the official tourist board websity thing they posted a list of most popular tourist attractions. So, just be aware of the amount of people, especially if it's gonna be the weekend. http://www.visitlondon.com/attractions/culture/top-ten-attractions

Agree completely, Tussaud's sucks monkeys, don't waste your time.

Science museum is pretty nice and I really enjoyed Museum of the Moving Image (MOMI) although I seem to recall that it was a pain in the arse to get to.

Forbidden Planet (Tottenham Court Road, near Centre Point?) is great but expensive and they will have nothing that you can't buy (cheaper) on line.

Trocadero has an iMax, some small interactive/rail "rides" and a cubic fuckton of arcade machines but expect it to be costly. I ate at the Planet Hollywood near there once, it was a lot of fun but was a number of years ago.

Agree on Imperial War Museum and also the maritime museum but then I love history. I thought that the Tower of London was a waste and there wasn't a lot to see.

I did do one of those open-topped bus tour things which was pretty decent. I'd been to London tonnes of times but didn't really know a lot of history/architecture/cool stuff. But do your research before you do this to make sure you know what you are getting.

If you're into all that techy stuff then definitely go to Goodge street. It's not far from Tottenham court road and it's basically just and entire street of electronics stores, it's got just about every bit of electric equipment you could think of, an arcade right next to the tube station and only 5 minutes from the more touristy areas.

Foridden planet yes, it is a bit out of the way but it's very good. Easy to sink hours into and to drain your wallet if not careful.

I say avoid some of the more touristy attractions in London such as Madame Tussards and the London Eye as they're not worth it and overly packed.

Camden Lock is pretty good but really more of a touristy attraction these days compared to it's seedy rebelious origins, mostly full of cheep sunglasses, hats and quote un quote "ironic tees" you know those unfunny tee shirts with pop culture refferences that weren't funny 2 years ago. But there is good stuff there and the food in particular is great and just wondering by you'll get plenty of Chinese girls giving you free samples of curry ect.

Brick Lane is very good and better than Candem these days when they've got the market going. Once just a place for people to sell old CD and videos on the street corners now a burgeoning market place and probably the coolest place to be in London. Great food, great vibe and atmosphere, wonderfully multicultural. And its the home of Rough Trade the coolest record shop in the world, they sometimes do free gigs there with artists promoting their work. They'll be incredibly rare and always in high demand when they do but it's something to look out for.

If you're into films go to the BFI centre on the southbank, full of indie and forgeign films in the gift shops as well as more films books and guides that you could ever need. They also sometimes do screening there of films. You probably wont have time for this and not everyone is as into films as I am but whatever.

If you don't want to see a film avoid Leicester square cinemas, there is loads but they are all incredibly expensive and not worth it even if it where they do the red carpet premiers. But the expection to this rule is a, for lack of a better word, quaint little cinema with very reasonable prices, atleast for London, called Prince Charles Cinemas. It's down an alleyway off of Leicester square and has a sign saying "Tickets From £1" outside, that is only for members and on latenight retro screenings but still.

I'm shocked no one has mentioned this yet but HARODS! Biggest best most expensive shop in the world! 8 floors and full of everything you could imagine! Solid gold football tables, scuba scooters for £80,000, golf buggies for £18,000, a pet store with the cutest poodles in the shop! It goes on, its well worth a look even if you aren't an excentric billionare, just seeing what there is brilliant fun.

I can't think of much more right now. If you're legal drinking age go out clubbing or to a pub, some great huge pubs and clubs in Candem. Worlds End is the one where everyone goes and I literally mean everyone, so it will be packed.

So enjoy London, my favourite place in the whole world. Oh and as a passing message, what with you being a tourist and all... ahem.

STAND ON THE FUCKING RIGHT WHEN YOU GO UP THE ESCALATORS ON THE TUBE, THERE IS NO EXCUSE NONE WHAT SO EVER FOR FAILING TO COMPLY WITH THIS SIMPLE FUCKING RULE. AND IT IS ALWAYS TOURISTS WHO DO IT!

So that aside have fun :) and pick up a copy of Time Out London, you'll look cool for buying it plus it might have some of my sister's art work in it so you'll be giving her money.
