Having heard nothing but good things about this game, I decided to give it a try. A bought a PC copy, but have been unable to play it properly due to hardware acceleration causing sound loops in cutscenes. As far as I can make out, the only way I can resolve this is to buy a new GeForce card. My question is: Is it worth it just to play this one game? Thanks.

No... Get a PS2 and a copy for it. Both combined should be cheaper than a GeForce.

Well, it's generally considered to be the scariest game ever made, so yeah it is probably worth it.

I can hardly believe you heard nothing but good things about it because the gameplay is pretty shit to be honest.
The good thing is it doesn't matter that much because the story and atmosphere are so compelling you're hardly capable of solving any more complex problems than "find key, kill monster".
Imho it is a game that you absolutely need to experience at least once, if only to find out how to properly tell a story in a videogame, i.e. including the gameplay mechanics, level-, character- and monsterdesign into the story.

I didn't think it was scary, though, except for the prison level.

Not much fun to play and not that scary but had really nice graphics and sound at the time for the PS2 and characters like ziggurat face, IIRC, were a big hit with some people. If you want to try this and other survival horror games then a PS2 would be a good investment.

I believe it was later released on X-Box as well so another option.

It deserves to be played, it is a very strong story and experience.
