Silent Hill movie wasn't that bad.

I've never played Silent Hill, and I liked the movie. Granted, I didn't understand much, but I think it did well.

I had to Wiki the plot afterwards to find out what it was all about. =P

I think the movie is the litmus test of the fandom;
Fans who dislike the movie actually love the series. Fans who like the movie just generally like "fucked up shit."
Same with Origins and Homecoming. 4 was cool, though.
Hmm, I'm not sure if I agree with that. I'm a huge fan of the games, but I liked the movie from an aesthetic point of view. If I had of expected it to follow the Silent Hill mythos I would have taken to it with flaming torches and pitchforks. Uwe Boll's game adaptations can't even get the aesthetics right, let along capture the spirit of the games.

As some of the other escapists have mentioned, Silent Hill feeds on the personal paranoia, repressed emotions and fears of its occupants. James Sunderland saw busty nurses as they were generated out of his repressed sexual desires and the fact he saw nurses all the time at the hospital when he went to visit his dying wife. Harry Mason saw weird, skinned pterodactyls because he was afraid of birds. I'm not sure what Rhada Mitchell's characters neuroses were but I doubt it would involve nurses with big titties. Urgh, I'm starting to get angry now just talking about it.

There was a lot of fan service in the movie.

Exactly. Why see a bad movie twice?
Yeah exactly, I did see it twice, but in two different ways, neither worked out for me, and that's it. Would much rather just play the games anyway. Although I do plan on keeping an open mind for the second movie, hopefully everyone has learned a bit from the first one....

Let me guess..one way is serious and the other way is for laughs?

I mean, if you played the games, the movie gives you a certain hand-clapping "i remember those things!" sort of recognition. But I tried watching it as a movie, not as a reference, and I've got to say, I wound up agreeing with the critical consensus.
My feelings pretty well parallel this. The first half-hour especially gives the feeling of "fan-wank" with all the familiar scenes, camera angles, etc. But it's like they put the first two games in a blender, then spread the results out on a sheet and tried to write exposition for the entire mess into Sean Bean's scenes. It didn't do very well either as an extrapolation of the series's story or as a stand-alone movie. Was it Uwe Boll-quality terrible? Not at all. But it could've been a lot better had they simply selected one game or the other to stick to.

Also, did anyone else besides me not at all buy Sean Bean as an American suburbanite dad?

Nah, first one was in the cinema, thinking "this is gonna be great!!!!!" because the trailer somehow had had me believe that it was gonna be everything I could want from an SH movie. Was mildly bitter while going home from that one.. Second time was after the bitterness had settled, to check if it was really as bad as it had seemed. I realised I was right within the first five minutes, rest of the movie was just me and my dad pissing about making stupid jokes. :p

As a movie, it's complete, unintelligible, shite. The dialog was genuinely painful in places. But as eye candy, it's glorious, a perfect recapturing of the look and atmosphere of Silent Hill. So, watch it with the sound turned off, and you're golden.

Having played the games, and seen the movie, it was not a great movie, passable...and I felt Pyramid Head was just included as fan-wank.

What I can say, they got the atmosphere down quite well, and little touches here and there worked.

All in all, I felt they looked at the games, saw what was "cool" and could "sell" and just threw it together. Wooden acting, and the ending, I actually thought fit...Once Silent Hill has you....it never lets go.

It didn't scare me as much as the games did, I felt no emotional connection to the characters, and there was not a single controversial thought from beginning to end.

That said, I enjoyed the movie, I just didn't really think of it as being like Silent Hill.

EDIT: And has been said before, actually quite decent acting, it was more the characters I couldn't connect with.

Oh dear, I guess you're right, but that whole serious/for laughs business somehow sounded totally different in my head at first. Lack of sleep does funny stuff to my logic at times.

While we're on it. I actually know a guy who watched through it 9 times just to find a damn wheelchair, because we all agreed that there would have to be one. I'm pretty sure he sold the dvd, when he finally ended his quest, victoriously! But including a wheelchair for a splitsecond in a parking lot.. meh. That just seems like more fan-service to me.. But nice that there actually are parts of the film that they managed to keep "true".

Hated it, they didn't really care much about the "movie" aspect of the movie, the plot was non-existent and they tried to please everyone. What we ended up with was a mesh of game references that were not really tied together (they looked more like a parade of random scenes that fans were supposed to get excited about) and a story that made less sense the more the movie progressed. I think they expected the non gamers to just enjoy the pretty pictures and the gamers to go "awwww it's pyramid head and the nightmare world and all that stuff, ONLY THIS IS A CINEMA AND THEY ARE 5 FT TALL, WOOHOO!!!!). Plus it wasn't scary.

As far as video game-based movies go it was pretty good, just because it didn't adhere to the original story doesn't make it bad. I thought the cult members were pretty interesting and those guys in gas masks were cool too, it wasn't really scary though.

Pyramid Head was supposed to be SH 2's main character's sexual lust.
Slightly correct. Pyramid Head was a manifestation of James' desire for punishment. Pyramid Head mocked him with his raping of the Mannequins, and several killings (which I will remain silent about, for spoiler reasons). Many of the monsters of Silent Hill 2 were meant to represent James' sexual frustration and anxiety since his wife died. The vast majority, if not all, of that game was symbolic of James' feelings towards Mary, and the inner workings of the supporting characters' thoughts and emotions.

OT: I actually enjoyed the Silent Hill movie. I would watch it again. I would buy it, even. I thought it deviated from the movie juuuuust enough to be a fresh[er] experience. I can see why critics may have given it poor reviews, seeing as it was entirely fan fodder (Like any video game movie). Especially the end. No newbie would understand that.

I thought the movie itself was genuinely good.
And for any haters... here's a reason to love it.

Just recently i unburied my PS1 from my closet, and a bunch of old games and found Silent Hill. I started playing it and beat in two nights, then I went to my Xbox and played Silent Hill 2, and got the shit scared out of me. Then i ordered the Silent Hill movie on netflix just to see if its any good, and surprisingly, for a video game based movie, it wasnt that bad!

A lot of critics gave this movie very bad reviews, and i was like, "what the hell!?". I can understand this now cause these critics never played the games and couldn't relate to them.

Like when the Lying Figures came out and the radios started to fuzz, I knew what was coming, and it was awesome.

and Pyramid Head.........nough said.

what did you think of the SIlent Hill movie?
I havn't seen it, but I personally am a huge fan of movie adaptations of games, thanks for the recommendation
