There are times at which one sees things with more clarity than they would wish to, and sometimes a news story, like this one which I heard on Rachel Maddow's show last night, is all it takes to open one's eyes. Here it is.

Apparently, the Democrats have secretly hired a professional speed reader, this particular man can read an entire page of writing aloud in 34 seconds. What possible use could they have for a man who can read so fast that it would, undboubtedly, be impossible to understand him? The Democrats wish to pass a bill which is roughly 434 (if my memory serves) pages long, and in an attempt to block the passage of the bill, the Republicans have demanded that every page of the bill be read aloud to the legislature, along with the thousands of amendments that the Republicans have made to it. The strategy here quite similar to the filibuster, simply to make the passage of the bill such a long and arduous process that it becomes impossible.

Is this really something that the founding fathers would be proud to see? Is this really representative government? Or is this just two partisan groups having a pissing match?
"Oh, well I'll make you read hundreds of pages aloud, you'll never get it done!"
"Oh yeah! Well I'll hire a professional speed reader!"
"Well I'm telling!"

Am I the only one who finds it rediculous that instead of actually having an intelligent debate, American legislators are wasting horendous amounts of time reading pages of legal document? Is this really what we want from our government? And, my question to international Escapists, does this kind of nonsensical bullshit happen in your countries too? In Britain, for instance, do Labor, Torry, and the Liberal Democrats decide that they're going to take votes based on whichever side can say "Yay" or "Nay" the loudest, then run out and hire people to custom build the loudest megaphones?

british politicians turned the pissing competition into an artform so long ago they hardly bother getting out of (someone elses) bed long enough to find anything out about their opponents. instead they hire teams of 'advisors' and 'spin doctors' to ruin each others credibility (which is easy as most of their opponents are also either fiddling their expenses or their rent boys).

this leaves little time for politics so for the last 100 years or so Permanent Secretaries (permanent meaning they have their job for life, not dependent on votes or who holds power) have run the actual departments of the government. they write the legislation, inform their 'boss' who and what to vote for and make all the actual policy decisions. they wave bits of paper under MP's noses to sign without letting them read it (which is why they keep getting caught out with 'i didnt sign that'/'oh yes you did' cock ups) and the MP's let them cos they're too busy doing whatever it is they've decided to waste our money on this month.

Me? jaded? never...

We used to have a similar problem in the British parliament, it helped to keep female suffrage out for quite a while if memory serves, you see each bill had a limated amount of time in which it could be passed and the problem was that if an MP didn't like the bill he could talk for hours and hours, causing it to run out of time. This meant it had to go through a long and arduous process in order to get back to the houses to be voted on, and even then the same thing could happan again.

The problem was solved, however, when a law that restricted speaking time for individual MP's speaking time was passed.

What you've described there is pretty similar to the filibuster system here. In order to prevent a bill, those in opposition can pretty much talk forever, preventing a vote from coming about, and if they can manage to get the opposing party to give up and leave, then they take the vote, and pass the bill they want. Now a filibuster can but stopped, but in order to stop a filibuster 60% of the legislature has to vote to stop it. The Democrats recently acquired 60% of the legislature here, meaning they could stop a filibuster, which is, presumably, why the Republicans have decided to try this new tactic.

What I don't get is why we put up with such silly shit though. The people who vote are supposed to be representatives of the people who voted for them, and if we are true to our democratic ideals, then all of the representatives must vote, or else all the people aren't represented. If you can create a tactic where you prevent certain people from being represented, then you are affectively saying that whatever your opinion is, it's more important than actually representing what the majority of the people want. It just strikes me so blatantly as taking the power from the people, and giving it to ruling elites. Add to this, of course, the fact that most of these representatives are getting paid off under the tables by big business, and it just speaks to how unfortunately corrupt the system has become.
