so i live in california unfortunately and one of the big upsets right now is that theres a water shortage. excuse me if im wrong but isnt this state right next to the damn ocean? why dont we just get a hose + a giant brita filter and just filter it? but aside from that anyone here see a simple solution to a situation that just seemed stupid?

Okay...

Where do I start? Do you have any idea how much giant desalinizers cost?

That's not how it works. Desalination is an expensive and energy consuming process.
I guess you have to look at what will cost more that or importing water.

Generally you use a Brita filter on water that is already purified to acceptable drinking levels, i.e. water out of a tap.

Drink blood instead? And its not like you need to bathe or anything. Or if you must, you could always drink bathwater

We have the exact same problem here in Hermosillo, so I know how you feel.

Well if the US wasn't wasting so much cash getting their asses kicked in the middle east then they'd have more money for more plants wouldn't they?

Blood has a high sodium content too.

The war put us in debt. If the war was over right now, we'd still be in debt. Not really an ideal time to build water treatment facilities.

HA! You have obviously never tasted tap water in Southern California.

It would probably just be cheaper just to have it shipped in then to get it out of the ocean and then distil it. And I wouldn't really call it a shortage until drinking your own pee seems reasonable.

Well no one denies that there are filters for salt but why not just stop importing water and just use that money to build the big.... oh wait that would mean to stop importing to the rest of the Us. well ummm cost too much money.

Wait a second. South Australia has had this problem for a decade and nobody outside the state gave a shit but as soon as California starts running out it becomes international news. Seems fair.

OT Desalination is not as simple as pumping water through a filter, the plant itself is huge and takes a long time to build costing a lot of money. 5 years later you have a Desalination plant and you can begin the expensive process of desalination as well as maintaining the plant. But yeah that was our solution, after about 9 years of water restrictions where we are not allowed to water our gardens.

As said above. Desalinization is not cheap or easy. My state, Georgia, is having lots of flooding, you can have our water...

You... you're kidding right?

If it was that simple do you think coastal nations of Africa would still have thousands dying from dehydration?

As already said in nearly every post, desalination etc, etc.

Come November when we get some snow in Minnesota, we will pack some up and ship it down to you so it will melt and voila! Water.
