What are simple things in this world that fascinate you for no reason other than that it's simplistic nature intrigues you?

With me, it's birds. I thought this up while staring at pigeons walking around eating bread. The mannerisms of birds captivate me for some reason, chickens, geese, ducks, any bird that is walking around catches my attention and I can think of nothing else to do except watch them for long periods of time, I don't know why, and I can't explain it.

What simple thing(s) in life captivates you?

I just watched a National Geographic episode about cephalopods (octopi, squids, cuttlefish, nautili, etc) and they just blew my mind.

It's enough to make me start believing in creationism. Then, on the other hand: I'd rather not want to believe some entity out there dreamt all that up.

Anything really. I can drift off and think about why anything is the way it is. I sat once for almost an hour just twiddling my fingers seeing what I can do with them.
Needless to say, I got some strange looks.

My cat. He is like a stretch armstrong or something. He does all this crazy wandering about eating and yowling and purring. But if i were to cut him open to see how he works he would just burst and stop moving.

Human nature. People will frequently misunderstand criticism or commentary as a personal attack, retaliating immaturely. It's amazing to observe how far such inane behavior may travel.

The locks on my door, they just fascinate me. They make a nice sound when I lock and unlock them so sometimes I just stand in front of my door for a few minutes just locking and unlocking the locks.

Most anything will hold my attention. Unless I'm supposed to be paying attention; then not so much.

One specific thing is the CD drive on my laptop. It can be popped out and put back in without rebooting, so I'll spend long periods of time pulling it out, playing with it, then putting it back in. Makes a nice whirring noise when it goes back.

There is now an image of a burst open cat in my mind. Thank you so much for that.

Squirrels. I go to Ohio State and we have an abundance of them on the Oval (big grass area in the center of campus). Sometimes after class I'd go sit there to study. I'd then find myself just watching them frolicking about.

I'd also agree with Blank Verse. I'm a psychology major so human nature and the human mind fascinate me (although I'm not sure how simple those things are).

The sky. I love to just look up at the sky on a clear night and stare at the stars. Sure, it makes me feel really insignificant, but it is so beautiful. It just makes me wonder about this world we live in. Why...

Wow... on second thought... it isn't that much of a "simple" thing is it?
