Of those ten games, the only two I own are Sims 3 (disappointing, bug-ridden mess; I've reverted to Sims 2) and Empire: Total War.

I really wonder how Valve's North American electronic sales would compare with all of this.
I doubt it would be top material, but I like to think it could get into top 5?

The Sims 3 is a strategic life simulation video game in The Sims franchise, originally created by Maxis.
The NPD Group, founded in 1967, is the leading global provider of consumer and retail market research information for a wide range of industries. like to browser the wow news, xxx-xxxx-xxxx.com just like escapistmagazine will release the latest wow news and provide warcraft gold every day
A spambot is an automated computer program, or, more rarely, a script, designed to assist in the sending of spam.

See, I can copy and paste from Wikipedia too, the only difference is, I have a soul.

Anyway, putting my vendetta against Skynet aside, does anyone think that The Sims 3 would have still been at the top if EA had used DRM with the game, instead of using incentives to get people to purchase as oppose to pirate the game?

Also considering that The Sims 3 was the second most pirated game, it would be interesting to find out how many people initially pirated that game then decided to buy it, once they realised that they wanted access to some of the features only available to registered users, like the Sims store and content sharing.

Regardless of whether EA used DRM or not, would The Sims 3 still have been the no.1 best selling game and no.2 most pirated game anyway?

Similarly, with Modern Warfare 2 being 5th on the sales list, but top of the pirate list [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/97157-Modern-Warfare-2-Was-2009s-Most-Pirated-Game], would those positions have been any different if Activision hadn't hiked up the price up of the PC version?

Once you can return a shitty game these sales will matter.

Frankly SPORE sold largely on advertising. It sure as fuck wasn't selling on quality or content.

I'm told in a few hundred dollars they'll have a full game ready for people to play.

I'm just waiting for 2011 when I imagine the list will just be WoW, Diablo 3 (hopefully), StarCraft and then the Sims.
Diablo wont be out in 2011, they pushed it back so it launches at the same time as episode 3. Woot Episode 3 is the new Duke Nukem!

It's surprising that Spore and Sims 2 are on the top of the list, but what really surprises me is Empire Total War. I though only hardcore RTS or history buffs (myself included) cared about the TW games, but apparently they outsold games like Borderlands or Batman.

I don't know if that says more about the popularity of the TW games or how little multiplatform games depend on the PC as a market.

No suprise "retail" PC software would drop in sales. More & more stores are carrying less & less PC games, & the ones they do keep in stock are those crappy $7 casual games you can download from any website.

It's not out of the question, honestly. D3 is shaping up really, really well from what we've seen at BlizzCon.
Yeah, Starcraft 2 was also "shaping up nicely"... in 2007. And in 2008. And it was going to get released on 2009. And it's 2010 with not even the open beta on sight. So, I honestly can't imagine how Diablo III will end up. /sarcasm.

As for people wondering why Modern Warfare 2 sold that much, well, let's just say that people aren't necessarily aware that the game no longer uses dedicated servers. Just because they might play online doesn't mean that they necessarily search around gaming websites getting news. Also, it's not the boycotters that are necessarily buying it. With the first Modern Warfare selling that well, it's not hard to imagine people buying the second one.
