I actually can't think of one right now. Normally, maybe I'd say the good ending of Shadow Hearts Covenant or a certain scene/death from Drakengard 2...but...those don't really fit the bill.

Honestly, I think I'd say the ending of Shadow of the Colossus. I was so emotionally drained by the end of it that I just sat there and stared blankly as the credits rolled. That ending was so emotionally charged for me. My goodness. ._.

<youtube=GQgkenMgqwY> Seriously, only character in the entire damn series I even found remotely likable. [Mainly cause she was the only one who didn't spend all her time being an emo crybaby]

Otherwise... I dunno, the quite a bit of stuff in Nier was pretty successful in making me depressed. Bit much to recount in one post. Ending D as well as the fates of Fyra and the King stand out though.

Oh yea FF13, the bit where Sasz watches his son get crystalized, then tries to shoot himself when he realizes he can't bring himself to take revenge on Vanille, probably the only part of the entire game I thought was well done.

The good ending of BioShock 2. Not only is it depressing to see Subject Delta die in front of Eleanor, but it is also touching when Eleanor keeps his memories with her.

Defcon, I think I win. That game is incredibly saddening.
But the only winning move is not to play.

OT: SoC with STALKER complete installed. Walking around the bar area was pretty depressing.

All I can say is, the ending of Fallout 3. I've never been more disappointed in my life.
Ugh, I just finished it today in a fit of boredom although I have racked up hundreds (yes, with an s) of game hours with a few different characters. It even got the ending wrong in the epilogue
saying that I was not as selfless as my father, although I was the one to enter the code and I did not taint the water.

Thank god I save with nothing but the ending...parade to go, so I can go back and explore the wastes. I was only level 15 and yet I think this is my favorite character yet.

ETA: The Crossing was pretty depressing too. It was a little sad to see the survivors not all that upset about their fallen one.
Your karma could also affect the ending....

The (Actual) ending of Red Dead Redemption.
After finishing your work for the Government you are allowed back to your ranch with your wife and son. After doing a few days of working on the ranch the Government turn up and kill you. The final shot is of your son looking at you and your wife's grave in the pouring rain.

Waking the Wind Fish in Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening,
also when you kill one of the final bosses (the skeleton with the flute) and he goes in into a very short and depressing speech about how everyone will cease to exist when the Wind Fish wakes.

Heh, why is SHE always mentioned or suggested in threads like these (key words: sad, depressing)?

IMHO her whole...act is what makes her a cardboard character.
The whole problem with HER is...screw it, spoiler text:

...that Aerith's death has become *the* landmark sad event in RPGs, if not in all of videogaming; her martyrdom and the attendant mourning has elevated her so that she's an icon; she's and not a *person* anymore. Therefore, it's in the end actually harder to relate to her; it's more tragic to see a human murdered who never meant anyone harm and was cut down with their life in front of them than to see the inevitable sacrifice of some holy thing born to die.
Indeed. But some people have decided to like the character no matter what. You can give them dialogue and plot analysis to convince em the character is corny as hell (and in fact more plot driver than character)...they'll just shrug and offer their emotional argument: "I genuinely cried...it did something to me...so it's real for me." The classic subjectivist retreat...

That's when I usually stop....cuz I find it rather difficult to say to people ...that they're too sensitive/ romantic/ emo...that they bond with virtual characters too easily...that they see something that isn't there. It's a sure way to start a fight.

The fanatics (in my experience usually female) have called me heartless...even soulless for not caring about HER DEATH. I call them hysterical and "selectively blind" for they only see what they want to see and no fact (like plot and dialogue) seems to have the power to convince them...but I guess it's foolish to even try.

Beyond Good and Evil when Jade and Double H find Pey'j dead on the moon. There's a really faint piano (I think) theme going on in the background and the dialogue switches to text. That was really depressing because he was alive when we mounted the rescue mission and I thought he was simply imprisioned, didnt think they'd encase a dead body and you had to move on. That moment was really distressing.

Klonoa: Door to Phantomile (Ps1 Version)

The Wii version totally fucking butchered that heart-wrending ending. Screw English Dubs, now I know how 4-kids haters feel.

Definitely Divinity 2: Ego Draconis.
The ending was INCREDIBLY unsatisfying.
As a player you realize after ~4 hours of playing that you are being lied to, but you're still destined to lose in the end. Then you get to the end beat everyone up and then being told "hahaha you've been tricked" and that's it. Stupid game.

Just to reitterate - SPOILERS.

Metal Gear Solid. Sniper Wolf. Nuff Said.

Snake Eater. When you get to the end, after having your mentor betray you, the physicaly and mentaly scaring battle to the finish and the eventual execution of your mentor. All to find out that it was all a lie by the government and a heroic roll of the dice by your mentor.

Thought the end of GTA IV wat pretty good, then I played Red Dead.

My first playthrough of Mass effect 2

I lost Thane in the first specialist choice of the collector base. that pissed me off then, but was more depressing later when his is the single coffin on the Normandy's lower deck. Much better if you save everyone.

Also Gears 2

when Dom has to shoot his wife
This, Thane was one of my favorites, and I thought that, because hes cold blooded he wouldn't mind it, and if I put legion in there his circuits or something might get fried (mordin is a little ***** so it goes without saying that I didn't consider him)

He made it through without any problems only to...
..get a rocket to the face

Most depressing and most FUUUUUUUU- moment, EVAR!

Not really depressing but the "California" stranger mission in RDR was kinda sad

You meet this guy who's determined to make it to California because it's been a dream of his family since his grandparents emigrated from Europe. You bump into him a few times and each time he's getting progressively worse.Eventually you find him dead and if you search his body you find a letter.Reading the letter it turns out he left his wife and child in order to follow this dream but it's gotten to the point where he didn't even know why he was doing it anymore and he's telling his family he's sorry and that he loves them. The final act of the mission is posting the letter to his wife

Gears of war 2 had a few depresssing moments, when carmine died that was sad but not as bad as when you find Tai all messed up and its like its ok Tai we're gonna get you outta here and he shoots himself :( and if it ends out the cowboy Izzy died while he gets in that fight with scourge offscreen that would be super depressing (he was like the coolest character)
Dizzy survives. If you read the novel "Jacinto's Remnant" Dizzy turns up and says that Tai saved him by taking on Skorge single handed so Dizzy could escape.I'd expect him to show up at some point in Gears 3.
