I think this is a fad. What happens is people are mistaking multiplayer for longevity.
thats the hilarious part.....if anything multiplayer kills longevity
There's only so much you can play a game with your friends or other people. That and the assumption becomes that multiplayer is always good and useful for a game because people will keep playing it with multiplayer.

I'd like to point out that online play actually reduces the value of a game over time, as a large amount of resources are pooled into it opposed to a strong single player mode, due to the playerbase dwindling overtime, and the elitists who stay on board become hostile to any new blood that approaches, making a large part of the game lost. And if the servers are shut down completely (eg. Metal Gear Online) then you've permanently lost a fraction of your game.

I prefer me some single player too. I disapprove of this new trend that you need to have friends in your game, otherwise you're just a creep, locked in your basement without any social interaction.

I go to forums for social interaction. Hell, I write three blogs for social interaction. I occasionally play some MMOs, but I definitely prefer SP games over multiplayer.
It's not that I don't want to socialize, it's just I don't want to have to deal with people being jackasses in my game.
