I'm in University at the moment, and our internet network has an amazingly annoying system whereby one has to request ports to be opened if you want to play games online. The limit is 15 openings, which isnt really enough to play some games online, and even then its a hassle to try and get them working.

So to cut a long story short, I'm looking for any FPS games (for PC) that have a decent singleplayer mode. I own most of the "core" FPS games, Bioshock, all CoD, Crysis, Far Cry, Half Life and Ghost Recon games. My PC is fairly good, but may struggle with some of the very newest releases :)

Also, for discussion's sake, which FPS do you think has the best Story mode/ single player experience and why?

Left 4 Dead and Left 4 Dead 2, along with all bonus content.

If you like Valve, they're always worth it. Even if you don't like Valve, they're worth it.

I hear awesome things about Metro 2033, but I don't know if school would be the right environment to play such an atmospheric game. Same with FEAR, my favorite single player FPS. Worth giving a try though.

Also I really enjoyed Far Cry 2, and I'm sure it's dirt cheap now.

This, and Half Life 2 is a great game and the graphics are still awsome considering it is 7 years old.

Left4dead is a great game, but I would never play it by myself. It is a much better experience online.

I may well that you up on that suggestion, hopefully it will work on my computer :D

I love valve, but I wasn't aware the the L4D games were particularly good experiences playing solo. Team based games like that are best played online, with mates using microphones imo. Thanks for the suggestion anyway though :)

You can run Crysis. I doubt it will be an issue...

Maybe it's just me then, but while I do enjoy playing L4D with friends (only ever in local coop when we're all in the same room), I find it stands up well enough on it's own, and is actually pretty fun sometimes just to unwind with.

I never buy a game without the ability for single player to be good, and L4D 1+2 both convinced me.

If you can find a copy, I would totally suggest System Shock 2. I hear good things about FEAR but personally, the game bored me less than half-way through the game. But, you might want to check some play throughs and see if it's interesting to you.

I also hear Condemned is not a bad series and STALKER as well. The Suffering seems pretty interesting as well, it's on my list of things I want to play. (it's because of the monsters.. I'm such a monster junkie) Also, Serious Sam HD is being released soon. It's rather silly and over the top, but maybe you might find it enjoyable.

Oh, and as far as a FPS with the best experience and story, totally the Half-Life series, hands down. I really can't say enough good things about it, the story and concept in general is great, and with HL2, it had some wonderful characters and a lot of suspense. I'm eagerly awaiting the end of the series.

Mass Effect 2, if you don't mind...you know...an actual storyline.

Bioshock is good, but I wouldn't pay more than $20 for it.

L4D is always good.

I already have Bioshock, as I said in thr OP. Same applies to Mass Effect 1 and 2. Both great games, and as you say, they have great stories I'm just looking for something a bit more shooter-ey :p

Ahh I've heard a lot of good things about System Shock. Might be time to try it put :)

Also, you just reminded that I once played a demo of Condemned. Scary as hell, but a fantastic game. I reckon I'll get it so thanks for the reminder! :D
