I just got Skate 3 two days ago and I can NOT believe how much I'm hating it.

What's with the unresponsive controls? I've NEVER had so many problems figuring out mechanics in my 32 years of gaming. Nothing I do ever works, especially ollies. Doesn't matter if I watch YouTube videos of the challenges, I still fail to do everything.

Does anyone else have this problem with the game? Despite playing on easy mode, I've never been more ready to throw my fucking controller into the wall. This is one of the most awful pieces of shit I've ever played, which I only picked up because I loved the Tony Hawk series years ago and was ridiculously good at it. However, no review or let's play could have warned me of how disgustingly difficult Skate 3 is to play (seriously, Dark Souls was easier than this). If I hadn't bought it digitally because it's half off and cheaper than what my local GameStop is charging for a used copy, I'd be returning this piece of crap.

This is the first time in my life that I feel like a game has defeated me. I'm so ridiculously frustrated that I don't want to continue (that's also something that's never happened to me before - I quit games when they bore me, never because I can't figure out how to make them work).

What do you all think of the game?

I havent played 3, but I have played the previous two, I really grew to hate the tricks being mapped to a stick, usually if i was just a little bit off, my character would end up doing a completely different thing. The novelty was fun for a while but eventually it just made me miss the simplicity of the old Tony Hawk games (which are still goddamn radical)

My experience with this game is limited to the video above. Every review I've ever heard of it declares that it's an utter waste of time and the glitches are more fun than the game proper.

I bought Skate 3 in probably the same sale you did, haven't got round to playing it yet though. I have played Skate 2 and my comments refer to that.

Basically you are right that it is (and largely remains even after you've played it for a substantial time) to pull off specific tricks. There are certain game modes which ask you to copy another riders move and they are a huge pain to pass. That said I enjoyed the sections where you are either racing or scoring points free-style a lot, especially as it doesn't matter so much if you get the wrong trick.

Skate is much more grounded in reality than Tony Hawks so you shouldn't expect to do 50+ combos across the whole city. Once you are able to pull something cool off its far more rewarding.

My cousin was ridiculously good at all the Skate games. On the few occasions I've tried to play co-op or competitive with him and his brother in Skate 2 and 3, I just could not make the god damn tricks work. I couldn't speed up well, I could barely jump, I couldn't do much of anything but watch him make me look like an idiot. They'd even let me do tutorial stuff to get the hang of the motions and I consistently screwed up the stick movements.

At least in the old Tony Hawk games I could actually compete against him since they were a lot more about timing and execution than arbitrarily moving a stick around in the vague shape of the trick on top of timing and execution. I'm sorry to hear you did not enjoy your purchase and I can't blame you for putting the game down. I'd probably do the same thing.

Skate 3 is awesome once you figure it out, it just requires practice and a whole lotta patience. While it's a massive step in the opposite direction from the Tony Hawks games it makes itself quite fun when it come to certain challenges such as the Hall of Meat, Races and Photo Spots. Granted, the control scheme isn't for everyone, and if you were expecting Tony Hawks than you're better off just playing something like Underground 2 or Project 8.

Skate and Tony Hawk are very different games, both very good on their own style.

Pulling off some specific tricks can be hard but if you take the time to look for what movement you need to do (the game has a menu that shows all the available tricks and how to do them) and then practice (and I mean actual practice, find a big ramp or a long rail depending on the trick and just keep doing it untill you get the hang of it).
