What was this world we live in built on, Man's skill or God's predestination?

Mans ingenuity and determination to improve made this world what it is. I find the idea that everything is predetermined a somewhat depressing thought.

Oy vey. Another religion-esque thread?
And this one strangely resembles the Armenian Vs. Calvinism discussions that go on these days.

Knowing the forum as I do, the majority will say Man's skill.
Any Calvinists will no doubt say predestination.

I, however, will say man's skill, with God's common grace.

I will now leave this thread, since I'm sure it will just end up in another, petty religious debate.

The end may be predetermined, but the journey is not. As we haven't reached our end yet, none of this was predetermined.

Good point, indeed.

As I do not believe in God, I'd say that our planet was brought to existance by coincidence, and Man's skill to adapt has made the world what it is today, both good and bad.

Man has no skill whatsoever to adapt. Man has only the skill to a) change his surroundings to his well-being (eg irrigation) or b) to facilitate other beings to his well-being (eg kill other animals and use their hide for warmth)

Nature vs. Nurture essentially, right?

I actually thought up this elaborate argument on the train this weekend about this topic, but it can pretty much be summed up to this:

It's both
