I have never played Diablo 1 or 2, but all of my friends have (but I am a WoW player) so I decided to check out Diablo 3 and it looks so awesome.

Would I be missing too much if i skipped D1 and D2?

Would I be able to get the story if i just read about it on Wiki or w/e?

Yup.

But you should still play D2 for it's awesomeness alone.

Edit: Let me do a recap:

D1: The town of Tristam is the backdrop for the game. In it's Church catacombs Diablo has taken residence. You(The Hero) go inside and kick his Terror arse all back to hell.
But not really cause his soul crystal is not destroyed.

D2:The Hero from D1 becomes Diablo and is trying to return to hell. On his way he frees his brothers(Baal and Mephisto) and wreacks havoc. The hero from D2 kills him in his Hell Sancturary and destroys the soul stones of Diablo and Mephisto.
Diablo is dead.

D2 expansion:But Baal is still out and is trying to corrupt the Worldstone.(What keeps the world together and other stuff) You kill Baal but the world stone is corrupted. So the stone is destroyed and shit is most likely going to happen. The game ends.

There isnt really much story to be had. Random merc comes to random town does random deeds then goes to next town does random deeds and eventually slays random big monster.
But, you could get D2 just for the b.net and to get used to the gameplay. It helps.

You don't have to miss D1 and D2. D3 will most likley come out in 2011.

They've got one more class to announce, and since Blizzard don't attend to E3 anymore, now that they've got Blizzcon, they will most likley announce it there next year in August.

They'll also be busy with Starcraft 2 and World of Warcraft: Cataclysm next year.

The story in 1 is: Bad thing come from church, go church, kill things.
And in 2 the story is: player from first game unleashed ultimate evil, kill it.
Story is not a big part of the diablo series but gameplay is and its awesome. You will find the graphics very bad though so i'd say wait till 3
Edit: Ninja'd

If graphics annoy you from D2 try Torchlight, made by the people who did D1 and I've heard it's basically the same game but I haven't played Diablo 1 so can't say.

I only ever played a demo of Diablo 2 and couldn't get into it. :/

Looking forward to trying Diablo 3 though.

So just play D2 then haha?

If you have a Battle.net account for WoW can you use the same one for Diablo?

You can. You just need to register the game on your account.

Diablo 2 doesnt have the most complex story but if you read everything and the books it does have a lot of depth and its a logical world (no inconsistencies in lore)
God dammit, I just typed the whole story out and I got a load error. Very short version inc:

-=- Diablo -=-
Diablo has 2 brothers, Baal and Mehpisto. world is split into 3 planes (Hell, Heaven, Sanctuary)
Diablo infests a town, takes over body of the king, 3 heroes try to stop him; warrior, wizard, rogue.
Warrior manages to beat him, but because the brothers are caught in a soulstone they need a new host; warrior crams it into himself to contaminate the demon.

-=- Diablo2 -=-
Rogue and Wizard are corrupted, helps evil now; Warrior is very confused/corrupted and is looking for his bro's.
Diablo/Warrior find Baal who has corrupted his archmage-host (so he is even more dangerous then normal) they imprison they archangel trying to stop him (Tyreal)
We free Tyreal, but diablo+baal are long gone to kurast to find mephisto.
Mephisto corrupted his host (pattern there) opens gate to hell, diablo transforms from human host into himself again and enters hell.
We kill Mephisto, take his soulstone.
We enter hell, smite the soulstone on the hellforge thus banishing their mind to some sort of limbo; we kill diablo and shatter his soulstone.

-=- Diablo2: Lord of Destruction -=-
Baal went to Mount Arreat to find the Worldstone (Sanctuary is the middle of the 3 planes, if that stone is gone hell has free acces to our world)
We get seal-of-approval from ancient barbarian half-gods; kill baal.
Tyreal comes in, sees the Worldstone is corrupted and decided that its better to blow open the barrier than to make it a one-way entry.

-=- Diablo 3 Trailer -=-
Hell is marching, something is apperently cast out/send to help us from the High Heavens.

Oh and here is a .gif of Tyreal because he is THAT awesome

Having at least in part played the previous Diablo games I would say that you should spend the time waiting for Diablo III playing the other games just because like other people have said, they're good games.

I just hope that Diablo III has Deckard Cain voiced by the same guy as the other games in it, because that would be awesome.

Trust me, D1 started the thing, it's like playing Fallout 3 without the first or second, its disrespectful. D2 is just pure AWESOME so you gotta play that too =D
