Agreed.
The steel armor is absolutely gorgeous (helped by the fact that it's not needlessly weighted by extras and the ornate designs that don't get in the way or look like they take away from the protection).
It's the first armor I've seen in Elder Scrolls that I really thought looked like it was made by a real craftsman (someone worried about utilitarian uses AND aesthetics).
For the most part, I'd say that the heavy armor all took a notable turn this time around both in being interesting to look at as well as looking like they were designed for the purpose of keeping you alive when some large man with an axe was trying to figure out the quickest way to empty your body of blood. Sure daedric armor is ornate but then that could simply be because those who would craft such a thing would mold it after the daedra in the first place. You could even argue that daedric influence itself is what causes such a shift.
Light armor on the other hand is fairly universally useless seeming. None of the hide armor looks like it would keep you warm much less keep do much to slow down an arrow. Of the lot, I'd say that scale, glass and base leather are the only sets that seem like they'd do anything.
I honestly found myself going back to that steel plate armor for far longer than was really useful. Sure, I'd carry around a set of daedric gloves specifically for the purpose of punching people to custard as the game required but in the end and I spent my fair share of time in the Ebony mail (until I tried leveling up block but was frustrated by the fact people kept dropping dead if I didn't spend all my time healing them), but in the end all I really wanted was something that I could reasonably expect a practical protection minded warrior to wear in the face of large scale land warfare and annoying dragon attacks.
