I haven't made a melee champ yet and am currently playing a mage, but I would suggest you just rush through the main quest. Once you learn dragon rend, and that summoning shout you should have no problems at all, since they can tank the damage for you.

I'd recommend the steed standing stone, in addition to the other advice being dolled out; extra 100 pounds for loot, potions and scrolls, and best yet, no movement penalty for worn armor. Basically means even if you're wearing full daedric armor, you move as though you weren't wearing any... may not sound like much, but you can close the distance between you and your foes a bit quicker.

My main character is a Khajiit that wears heavy armor and wields a greataxe, but I also took to sneaking, which makes things a bit easier as well. :p

As for magic, a bound battleaxe could give you another edge. It'll nom your magicka pool (assuming you have enough to even think about casting it at all), but the axe has no weight and thusly is far more forgiving on your stamina, which will allow you far more power attacks before you get winded.

And finally, dragons. Whenever you find yourself facing one, best thing to do is find a spot for him to land. If you're nestled in rocks, or generally uneven terrain, he'll just circle around and strafe you with fire or ice breath. Once he lands... well, obviously stay away from his mouth. :p Bites are painful, and there's a possibility of him insta-killing you. On his flanks, his only defense is a tail slam, and the occasional breath attack.

Not particularly, having Two-handed means you don't need block, which frees up some perks for archery to balance it out.

I disagree respectfully, one handed with block is very effectve against dragons, elemental protection stops most of a dragons breath attacks and shield bash can interrupt their attacks.
True, but whenever I meet a dragon I get out my warhammer and go Cambodian on its ass.

(Insert gushing praise for Skyrim about how you can play it the way you want to)

Investing 2 points in restoration for the novice discount + 50% extra healing will make dragons a breeze. Change to the healing stream while dragon is on the air, 90% of dragons can't outdamage your healing with breath. Once they land you swap into your 2hand and swing away.

hint get wuuthrad as quick as possible, it's stats are equivalent to a daedric battle axe and can be enchanted

Easiest way to upgrade your smithing ability is to find Iron Ingots (there are literally tons throughout the game) and then just keep making Iron Daggers repeatedly, then you can sell all the daggers as well. Also, make jewelry with the gems and silver/gold bars. Higher Smithing=Higher level armor. Also, don't skimp on Enchanting, as you can then make yourself very resistant to just about anything.

oh, and no, i didn't. I'm being a fucking roman soldier.
Actually you can stagger dragons by shield bashing them :D also the shield deflects a lot of damage from their breath attacks

I specialize in 2 handed weapons and by level 20 I was 3 shotting dragons and 1 shotting everything else.
It is super easy.

I rolled a Nord who is now level 12 and is profecient in Two Handed Swords and Heavy Armour.

He wares improved full steel armor, uses an improved sky steel great sword and a hunting bow with steel arrows.

He is getting raped by troll dragons who can shoot flames and light him on fire underwater.

Did I make a a character totally unsuited for taking out dragons?
No dude 2handed is the superior melee choice imo. Better than dual wielding by miles (you can block with 2handed read: you can interrupt power attacks) and is slightly better than shield + 1h for the stagger factor (though that is just preference for me. I like my enemies to stagger when I power attack their asses). Dragons land often and try to eat you and smack you; this is your chance to whoop ass. One suggestion I would make is that you invest in block 1/5 so you can unlock the perk that slows down time during power attacks. With this, you become an unstoppable monster against other melee opponents considering that you out-range them and can easily interrupt all their power attacks. I've created 6 characters so far of different specializations, gotten them all above 20 and I can confidently say that I've had the most fun with 2handed weapons (and then raising sneak for the totally broken x30 backstabs with daggers :D)

Don't worry about armor. If you get all the armor perks and max out your smithing, you can make steel armor that exceeds 526 armor points, which brings you up to 80% DR. Any armor points over 526 are useless.
Just a question. Is it possible to raise any of the light armors to a comparable level? I've been investing in the relevant light armor perks but it still seems like I'm wearing toilet paper. My armor ratings with full flawless glass and light armor 4/5 with the 25% bonus for all light armor don't exceed 300 I'm pretty sure. Just wondering b/c I really like the look of the glass but I'm questioning the effectiveness of light armor in general because enemies seem to be damaging me excessively. Thanks.

Yep, rank 30 (I think?) blocking perk is elemental resistance; get that and Spellbreaker and... well, mages and dragons will rue the day, methinks. :p

Not at all. As I am sure it has been said already but, go through the main quest and get Dragonrend. It brings the dragons down to your level. Also get your smithing up high to where you can make dwarvern and elven gear. Make your self some dwarf armor with a nice elven two handed sword and boom. Your all good mate. You can find all the mates you need in dawnstar (they have a mine for your elf great sword mats. That should help you out tremendously.

My friend, all characters with an offensive skill can take on a dragon. It's just a matter of tactics and staying power. I would recommend getting your armor-plated tookus up to the Lord Stone (indirectly north of the Lunar Forge). Dragons will be much less terrifying from the air that way. In fact, a short walk and a careful fall can get you to a Word Wall nearby to test yourself.

The advice so far has been pretty sound. Get the buggers to land. Then you'll do fine.

The only real problem I had with my 2h fighter was a dragon in Winterhold. The blasted lizard kept landing on the building, just out of reach, and shouting at me. I just kept healing and using the Fire Breath shout at him until he finally landed just outside town. Then I ran up and smashed his head in.

Persistence is key.

Dragons are ridiculously easy. Just let them land - Dodge and hide behind stuff if taking too much damage, and make sure you're nearby a moderately open area for them to land.

2 handed works fine. You can block just fine, you don't need any perks.

Just some advice, though - Pick up the Ebony Blade from the Daedric quest in Whiterun. You'll survive any encounter.

Nah man its not really a mistake, the game (from my observations) seems to favour one-handed, but I went two-handed imperial, and once you get to level 80 in two-handed, with 100% extra damage and a good enough sword, its too easy, thats how great the two-handed great sword is.

For dragons, basically you need to get them on the ground, not sure where you are in the story, so I won't tell you what its called, but you eventually get a shout that can ground a dragon for like 10-20 seconds or something. You shout at them, they turn blue, then they are forced to land. You then run up to their side, because in the face without good enough armour/fire/ice resistence, you're in trouble, not to mention they can just bite you if you're not careful and throw you, and they can swing at you with their tale if you go behind.

Also a companion will help you, they can act as a distraction. But I'd strongly reccomend going with Dwarven armour or Orcish, there's a whole set you can steal from some place south of Riften. And invest some time in Smithing, it'll make the enemies a bit harder, but ultimately you'll have better armour, then kill some more enemies with your two-handed and you're on to 60%, 80% then 100% extra damage with your two-handed and everythings fine.

Try finding the Elemental Fury shout, it speeds up your attack rate and with 2-Handers you become a lawnmower and all before you is but grass waiting to be shredded (except trolls, with them you need to time your attacks and step in and out of range as they try to hit you).
You need to kill them before they kill you, since a shield is the only real way to block you'll have to use potions or enchantments to let you focus on dealing as much death as you can, playing to the strengths of 2-handed weapons.

Generally speaking if you are having problems with something in Skyrim, there's a Shout for that.

EDIT: Don't take how important speed is as an indication you made the wrong choice since one-handers are faster.

No, you're probably just not very good at the game. it's piss easy to get items with over 50% fire resistance, and the ai is so buggy so it's not like dragons can ever hit you

Nah, you're probably just at that level where enemies are harder than they should be. You'll get past it.
