The first time I heard Ulfric's voice, I nearly creamed my panties. So I went to go play with him first. My character was a Dunmer, so I quickly regretted it.

I honestly don't like either side, every character I had so far was neutral, but I plan on making two characters, one for the empire and one for the stormcloaks. If there is a way to screw them both over however, I'm switching back over to my main guy in hopes of making Skyrim independent from the empire and killing off the stormcloaks regime.

Unfortunately, there isn't a way... yet anyway. So far, you either have to join and aid one side or the other, or not do the Civil War questline at all. As I've already posted, I'd like a more neutral option to the Civil War, but as it is and probably will ever be there isn't such a option.

Captcha: die-hard

Yes Captcha, that I do.

must say the stormclooks, for one sole reason, it is incredibly inconvenient for the Thalmor, and entirely convenient for the Blades, with Dragonborn all but leading the Blades, I'm sure Ulfric will have the blades become his Heavy Body Guard, with that the Blades take care of the dragons and will likely seek to bring order to Skyrim for their convenience. Hammerfell already seperated from the Empire, from what I heard in the campaign, with Hammerfell & Skyrim, the two superpower provinces of the Empire seceding, I'm sure some other province(s) will also follow. The Blades having experience against the Thalmor, they would also be useful advisors in a war against the thalmor. Delphine is a Breton, so who knows maybe she can get the Forsworn on their Side, in exchange for the small kingdom they lust for. If all that works out then the Thalmor are for the most part are facing a scary scenario. Besides which would make a more interesting sequal, a dying empire facing a likely already lost war, the thalmor preferred imperial victory, which is better? resolving a conflict in a way that is preferred by your enemy, or one that hurts them the most?

...READ A BOOK!

No, I mean read a particular book. "The Bear of Markarth" to be precise. It's not a long book, and it might shed some light on why "I support the Stormcloaks to stick it to the Thalmor... and the Forsworn can help! =D" is a bit of a wall-banger.

The whole civil war effectively began when Ulfric Stormcloak swooped in with his army and massacred the Forsworn nation to reclaim the Reach for Skyrim (and then demanded Talos worship be restored in return, but this just got the Thalmor involved). Even if the post-conquest atrocities are falsified, I'm pretty sure having your nation annihilated would be a bit of a sore spot.

Oh, and let's not forget that the Stormcloak replacement Jarl of Markarth hails from the same family that keeps their king enslaved in their silver mines.

So yeah... I don't think they'd gel.

I am a Khajit and Ulfric is a douche towards my kind. The Nords are racist towards me, and I like Jarl Balgruuf of Windhelm and I do not want to see him rotting in a jail he does not deserve. Also Ulfric is working with the Thalmor and I do not like his second in command

The Empire, because a house divided against itself cannot stand and Ulfric's motivations are questionable at best, dangerously selfish and xenophobic at worst.

Main quest and Empire/Stormcloak quest line spoiler below.

The Thalmor have realised this and are even aiding the Stormcloaks to further fragment an Empire that they could not wholly defeat alone. They allowed Ulfric's escape and were about to spring him from custody before Helgen was attacked.

Plus, the Empire have pseudo-Roman armour. That's just the business.

Lol...I just started playing Skyrim this week...and I picked the Stormcloaks BECAUSE they were racist.

They're not just saying "get out of my home" it's also "Don't come through the door in the first place."
That makes sense to me. It's the full spectrum, rather than just telling people to uproot and leave, they're also saying - don't come here in the first place.
It's their home, their little piece of heaven - and they don't want anyone else on it.
Makes sense to me. Empire - you were warned. Get out before you're in too deep!

...and I'm doing this as a dunmer too :p

I've made both choices, played two gameplays one for the stormcloaks and one for the empire, my ultimate choice is the stormcloaks. I like to play as it were real life and i was the character, i see the Empire as it were the roman empire and the Nords as the real world Nords, i don't like what the roman empire did to the northern europeans so i sided with the stormcloaks of course, i wouldn't like to see my land being ruled by foreigners, they telling me what i could or could not do, furthermore the Imperial rule is pushing Skyrim back in my opinion they would be so much better by themselves, without the subjugation for the Empire. Actually we should make some considerations about this choice, some argue that the victory of the stormcloaks would weaken the humans in general, since the Imperials would come back and slaughter the Nords with other legions, but i think that if the Nords get free from the Empire they will be able to make their own choices freely, and alliances with the other human races (since the elves have no sympathy for humans, they see the humans as a threat to their lifestyle and such, like the snow elves tried to drive the nords out of Tamriel, and the Ayleds enslaved the humans in Cyrodiil) it's proven in the factions of the upcoming Elder Scrolls Online, with the elves uniting against the human menace. Even the imperials should re-organize their political system, Queen Alessia's dream empire has long vanished and given place to a long corrupt empire, just like the roman empire was in the real world and coundn't stand for itself anymore, it's a matter of time to the Thalmor take over. the Empire including elves and humans is faded to fail, it's a matter of time until the Mers try to get rid of the humans again.
Btw this argument that the Nords are racists is BS, every race in Tamriel is "racist" toward others and they have very good reasons for that, all races have been involved in strifes and wars against each other, and they all dislike and are very suspicious of foreigners, they've learned at cost of much blood that the only way to live in peace is along your own kind, even Nords pro-Empire don't like foreigners in their lands, as BlakBladz said above they want their land to be theirs, they know by personal experience that different races living in the same place will end up in war, it gets time and effort for you to be accepted by the population, if you have played Morrowind you know that, but if you help the people's causes and start doing good actions no matter if you're Khajitt, Argonian or whatever they will start to like you, even more because you're the Dovahkiin, people who are saying that the Nords are racists have no understanding of the TES universe and only played Skyrim because it was cool and hot in the media.

My loyalty is with the Nords and the Humans forever!

The way i see it, it's like american: Empire (british) storm cloak (americans) we want independence to worship who or what we want but the empire doesn't let us. also after we won the war we were still racist (the slave stuff) but they got there freedoms and stuff. so yah storm cloaks is my side.

The choice for me is a bit more complex than other people, it seems, as my reasoning isn?t a stock ?siding with the guys who tried to kill you is stupid? or ?the Stormcloaks are racists?. First of all, I play a Breton, so I can be neutral in-character (before someone brings up the Forsworn, they hate both sides, so they aren?t being accounted for here.)

Secondly is that, I recognize the merits of the Stormcloaks, and I understand the threat to Nord culture as well as the danger of banning Talos worship. I personally feel that the Nords need to be shown humility as they are collectively prone to seeking glory or grasping the complexities of politics, they can fight and they can be proud, but they are rarely subtle or realize when a light touch may be necessary. This may also be because I?ve grown sick of ?proud warrior race guys? who are just Fantasy Vikings; the Orcs are more interesting because of their alien morality but the Nords try to pass off all their stuff as great and glorious.

I threw my lot in with the Empire, after killing the Emperor, because I feel that the Stormcloaks represent the egotism of the Nords ? they represent a people who have failed to find humility, subtlety, and progress. In-character I desire that Tamriel may one day make use of the technological advances of the Dwemer on a large scale, so the glorified barbarians really do not sit well with me. I killed the Emperor because I feel his replacement will be free of Titus Mede?s terrible reputation, thus free to (hopefully) do better.

FOR THE EMPIRE!

My biggest reason is that Ulfric is kind of an idiot. Ulfric doesn't work for the Thalmor like many believe after reading his file but he's still a puppet doing exactly what they want, weaking the empire which is even worse. Rather then doing the Thalmors bidding out of loyalty he does it because he's too dumb to realise it. He also comes off as a prick when he says he killed the king because he was weak and confirms ''Because i could''. The guy's motivation is also questionable as its implied he's just into the war for his own gains. A lot of his own allies, even the naive lawgiver bluntly say that ''Ullfric is in it for Ulfric''

Secondly I don't think Skyrim has any real reason or right to fight for ''freedom'' and independance. Skyrim has always been part of the empire and the legion isn't some king of Nazi regime. Any alliance with the Thalmor will only last untill they are prepared for the next war, about ever imperial will tell you that.

For all the talk about the emperor being weak i don't get that impression. Titus is supposed to be a top general who drove out the Thalmor out of cyradil and facing him really didn't make me want to kill the guy.

Lastly when given the choice between Romans and Vikings i'l pick Romans.

I chose the Stormcloaks because:

1. The empire tried to kill you in the beginning for no reason, you weren't even supposed to be there but they had to follow procedure for some reason.

2. The empire are in league with thalmor.

3. The empire does nothing good for skyrim. Skyrim has a high king that is not really a high king at all, just a pawn under the emperor.

4. Generally the people of skyrim want to rule themselves.

Too bad that the stormcloaks are intolerant. But from the two I always choose stormcloaks

I joined The Stormcloaks. When you think about it, after gaining independence and separation from the incompetent Stormcloaks, Skyrim has actually a good chance of facing the Thalmor.
How?
Simply put, Hammerfell and Argonia. Both of them aren't with The Thalmor, Skyrim can form a three way alliance with both. Maybe even try to form some sort of alliance with the Khajit, making them realize The Thalmor's lies.

This! (on my first playthru)
Forget everything else, forget that some Stormcloaks are racist, forget that the Thalmor are allowing the civil war to carry on for their own good.

You sentence me to death without even knowing what I've done or who I am, I'm not on your list for Talo's sake! I could have been a new recruit but the paperwork got muddled up and I end up on the wrong coach whilst Dave "The Granny Basher" Jones is running around Skyrim, free to bash grannies again!

On my second playhtru I went Empire, which does makes sense for my Imperial character, and I agree with alot of the posts here, if the Empire loss Skyrim, the risk losing to the Thalmor everywhere. But I have to say everytime I hear "FOR THE EMPIRE!" I want to shout back "Vale, true to Caesar!"

So I recently started a new runthru, picked a Nord and....
Became a Forsworn!
(After reading the Bear of Markarth I realized just how badly done to they really were, and the war crimes rained down upon them by, not only Ulfric, but by the Empire who turned a blind eye)

My third time of playing the game, I was a Khajit (sorry if its spelt wrong I tried) and I chose the Stormcloaks, BUT, after finding out that they ruined Whiterun, Solitude etc. I was very disappointed, as I thought because it is their homeland they would treat it with respect and 'do up' the houses and such, but no, so after that I abandoned the save (also because the save corrupted and I was left on a loading screen for days) and I had just done the main story so I was quite annoyed. Basically now, I am a Nord woman and I don't know if I should join the Imperials and effectively 'bow' to the Thalmor or just let them do their thing with their war and stuff. My worry is that they will destroy cities like the Stormcloaks did and I don't want that to happen because it just ruins the city. I like the Stormcloaks as an idea, rebelling against a seemingly corrupt empire to save their beloved homeland, as is my reason for signing up in the first place, but they turned out to be - for lack of a better word - dicks. So... could someone please tell me what the Empire do to the other cities and what knock on effect that with have on the game, not the storyline as such, but more, the merchants, look of the cities that sort of thing.

If you can't understand this, I will put it simply, which will have a better effect on the region of Skyrim?

Thanks.

I hate the Thalmor, because, this is my first time playing the game (with my wood elf mage lvl. 40 XD), my first objective was to become a powerful mage , so i went to the mages college, there i started the quests, and at the end i became arch-mage, and everyone knows what happens in the final quest, so on that moment i hated thalmor, my skyrim life had a meaning: destroy Thalmor...
so i was thinking about joining the stormcloak cause, and i'm still gonna, because i'm going to pretend i didn't read the spoiler about ulfric's dossier.. and another thing, i also hate the forsworn, they are a bunch of heathen assholes.. and i'm making that my secondary objective in life (on skyrim)
