Skyrim's Improvements over Oblivion

So, Steam has a 75% off sale ($5) for The Elder Scrolls: Oblivion GOTY Edition, and it has made me wonder: what are the differences/improvements of Skyrim over Oblivion? Of course, there are double-wielding, a more dense world, and randomly generated structures in Skyrim, but what is/was so great about Oblivion? Is Oblivion's world really as unpopulated as people say it is?

Oblivion was a mess of a game I still wound up spending 100+ hours on. Not sure if that qualifies as a recommendation or not.

In my opinion though, Morrowind is much better than Oblivion (but admittedly not as good as Skyrim). Go download that and make sure to get some mods to improve the graphics.
