Eventhough this sound cool I'm betting it will be limited to having two extra gears at most. I hope they make it into a ridiculous amounts (like it need 100 X to make armour X).

The more I read about Skyward Sword, the more I want it. Hopefully Nintendo will announce a release date for this game.

Ahem. That being said, Link's pockets are like a portal to another dimension. Otherwise, how else does he fit all that stuff in there?
Actually, my friends and I are of the belief that there is a portal on the back side of Link's shield. This stems from the way that he switches items.

OT: If they do it right, this upgrade thing could be really cool, and add some playtime as well.
I've always just used the basic belief (based on Fantasy Logic and the old Zelda cartoon (be it canon or not, it makes sense) that Link owns a Bag of Holding that he uses to carry all his things.

As for this, sounds sort of Monster Hunter-esque, which I don't consider an overall bad thing, considering in a few Zelda RPs I've been in I always love the option of tailoring my gear myself (tempering swords, collecting Dodongo Hide for armor, crafting potions and arrows, ect).

It won't take my money fast enooough!

I'm actually good for this, as long as it's not just like the best AC2 armour - collect a lot of things and get an optional better thing.

Upgrading items is not new or innovative, not even within the Zelda series. Remember throwing items into the pond and the fairy would upgrade them in A Link to the Past?

Personally, I think an upgrade system is usually worse than just buying new equipment but I guess I am soured by upgrade systems in Final Fantasy 9 and 13 which were badly implemented. At best an upgrade system is exactly the same as buying/finding the Hylian shield to replace the Wooden shield and buying/finding the mirror shield to replace the Hylian Shield. At worst it justifies grinding by making the upgrade much more expensive than buying or finding the next shield, sword or tool.

So for all of you calling this innovative, it's not. It's just a desperate move to (that has been done before and dropped) do something different and that usually works out badly.

Why? This makes no sense. All this stuff they're cramming into this game which just doesn't fit into the LoZ mold. Look, Nintendo, I understand you want to try something new- so why not just make a whole new IP. Don't take your standard JRPG plot, setting, upgrade system and paint Link onto it- just do something else.

We have enough Zelda, thanks.

I'd actually like to say "it's about time" to be completely honest, with the exception of Twilight Princess (magic armour), I've always ended Zelda games with a full wallet and nothing to blow it on. Now rupees have real uses.

So, all the times we've had to upgrade our gear in Minish Cap, A Link to the Past, Majora's Mask, and Ocarina of Time have been what, the trial versions? So now it's becoming more of an RPG than an adventure-puzzle game. That's fine. I can live with that. Better yet if they meld the two into a wonderful union.

One thing I would like to see, though, is the Hookshot being upgraded into the Clawshot--where the claw can latch onto more types of targets.

Tempted, but the motion controls still put me off no matter how accurate they are.

Damn it Nintendo.
That's my biggest issue with it, too. I've played all the console Zelda games as they've come out, starting with the original back when it was new, and some of the handheld ones, and I've really liked the vast majority of them. A few of them are up there with my favorite games of all time.

This is the first time I've ever had a hard time getting excited about a new Zelda game, though. It's almost guaranteed to be fun, even if it's just more of the same, but it could get interesting if they stick a bit of new stuff in. On the other hand, the disc drive in my Wii is half-dead, and the more a game uses motion controls the more likely it seems to be to irritate my wrists. I couldn't even finish MP3 because of it. TP didn't bother me, because the wiimote controls were just kind of tacked onto a GC game and not used for much, but they seem vitally important to this one. Oh well.

True. So true indeed.

But seriously, I'm kinda worried about this. Does this mean that in order to improve my sword from now on, I have to search the overworld for a rare fungus that drops a very specific kind of phlem? I'd rather not...

Holy crap!
A reason to spend rupees!

Really though, this may be a good thing.
Yeah I don't think an upgrade system is entirely necessary in Zelda which is why they didn't do it before and here it will depend a lot on how they balance it, but that is the key issue in my opinion. A long time flaw in the Zelda games is eventually you get to the point where you have max rupees in your wallet with nothing to spend it on. Then you find a hidden treasure chest and surprise, it's more rupees you don't need! But your wallet is full so you have to put it back. Minish Cap was probably the worst for this.

So rather than an upgrade system what Zelda games really need is a useful way to spend all your loot. You should never have to turn down numerous treasure chests because your wallet's full.

It has potential, but, it better have no grinding. Every mob in Zelda universe are not there to stop your progress, as previously stated, they're just there to annoy you. Making you kill them because "you need what it drops" is not something I'm looking forward to do, even less spend 3 hours on.

Could have just said "There will be an upgrade system." The big explanation was pointless, sounds like you're making it a very basic adaptation that's been done enough times that we know how it works. Are you gonna explain in detail how the "pause" function will work? How about saving a game, I've never done that before!
