Sledgehammer Aiming to Make Best Call of Duty Yet

Online job listings reveal Sledgehammer's ambitious agenda.

Fledging studio Sledgehammer has never made a Call of Duty game before - or indeed, any game at all - but that isn't stopping it from aiming high. Simply put, its goal is nothing short of creating the very best Call of Duty ever made, at least in terms of review scores.

Sledgehammer revealed this little tidbit of information in a number of online job listings [http://activision.taleo.net/careersection/sledgehammer+games/jobdetail.ftl] for the studio. Of the thirteen positions available, only three make any mention of review scores, but each makes it pretty clear that Sledgehammer is looking to make a game that gets a Metacritic score of 95 or better. It seems likely that this is blue-sky thinking, rather than a genuine goal, as the highest Metacritic score [http://www.metacritic.com/search/all/call+of+duty/results?sort=score&page=0] for any of the Call of the Duty is 94, jointly held by the Modern Warfare 1 and 2, and it's hard to imagine a studio beating the best that series has produced so far on its first try.

As yet, we don't know anything about the game that Sledgehammer is making, aside from the fact that it's definitely an FPS, and definitely a Call of Duty game. There have been rumors that it might include space marines [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/105133-Space-Marines-Rumored-for-Next-Call-of-Duty], or that it could be Modern Warfare 3, which some think Sledgehammer might make by itself [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/104151-Analyst-Predicts-Modern-Warfare-3-Will-Be-a-Sledgehammer-Game], while others think it will be a team effort [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/107148-Rumor-Infinity-Ward-Sledgehammer-and-Raven-Team-Up-For-Modern-Warfare-3] from Sledgehammer, Infinity Ward, and Raven Software. Whatever the truth of the matter is, it's encouraging that Sledgehammer is striving to make an excellent game. It's a shame that that level of excellence comes with a particular number attached to it, but there's not much that anyone can do about that.

Give the new kids a shot!
They might actually create something non-mediocre in a CoD game!
I am for this 110%

i just want a cod game were the weapons are balanced, and a smg isnt the most overpowered weapon on the battlefield with zero recoil =/

They have a lot to do then to impress me.

I consider the first Modern Warfare to be the best CoD and one of the best games I've ever played. I don't doubt Sledgehammer ability to make a good CoD game, but its going to be tough to surpass MW.

Hm, well...

Judging by how much hate Call of Duty gets, I don't think it's possible. The multiplayer aspect will be too overpowered, or too underpowered. Quick scoping will either be in, or sniping will be totally useless. Killstreaks will either be too strong, or not strong enough. Perks will be lame, or game breakers.
Single player will suffer from horrible AI, or AI that plays the game entirely without you. The story will either be too cliche, or completely unbelievable. The characters will all be too tough and only emotionless meat bags, or have personalities that are grating on the nerves because they make jokes and try to lighten the mode. So yeah...

I will be picking this game up as soon as I can and adding it to my Call of Duty collection right away though, whether it lives up to everyone's expectations or not. It would be nice if it managed to beat the other ones.

Since they're newcomers, I'll give them a shot. But if they screw this up then the sword comes down (incredibly obscure reference.)

I applaud the studio for wanting to develop a high quality game. Sure, shoot for the stars. The trouble is, we heard similar rhetoric before. The Activision PR fired up a few months before Black Ops came out, saying saying it was the best CoD to date. Depsite what people believe about whether that is true, I think there is a real risk of people seeing through this marketing strategy.

Is you're reference to the Sword of Damocles? cause if it, it's not as obscure as you think it is.

Yeah that's what I was referring to. For whatever reason though a lot of people have no idea what it is.

It's never all the SMGs, there's always just one. The Mp40s, UMPs, and Ak-74us of the world may be hideously unbalanced, but the rest of them are downright under-powered.

Well, we'll see. I doubt they can top cod4, but I don't think anyone short of DICE can make a worse cod4 knockoff then treyarch did in the last installment, so hey, lot's of room for improvement.

Well that's good.

If they had come out saying 'Yeah, we want to make a game not quite as good as the predecessors' I would have been quite worried.
Yeah, it'd be like a band saying "well, this album isn't as good as our last, don't bother buying it."

We need NEW people in the industry. 2010 was already a year of sequels..
I dont need a Tomb Raider 2531.. amaze me! Even if its an abomination like Supreme Commander 2 (which I liked since it was a completely fresh approach to RTS).
