Alright Escapist, I come to you in an hour of need. I have a tough time getting to sleep, and tonight is a night where I need to get to bed early so I can wake up early. Does the Escapist have any suggestions as to how to easily put yourself to sleep?

I do not have any sleeping pills or anything of that nature, so please don't suggest those by the way.

Don't sit on the computer. It stimulates the parts of your brain that keeps you up in the first place.

Just go to bed now and don't think of anything. You'll naturally fall asleep soon enough. However, not thinking about anything is vital. I sometimes stay awake for hours because I'm thinking about things like what my next short story will be about, and I end up taking ages to get to sleep. Blank your mind and you'll drop off easily.

Failing that, masturbate. And no, I'm not trolling. Apparently scientists have proven that masturbating makes you tired more easily so you get to sleep faster. Wort a try anyway, and even if you don't fall asleep you'll still have a good time, if you know what I mean...

Run into a wall. Really really fast.

(I can't help you with sleeping. I had a thread a few days ago where I asked for help on the exact opposite of your problem. In my experience, getting 1-3 hours of sleep will keep me up for the rest of the day, but otherwise I can't really help ya.)

Was planning on getting off in roughly 15-20 minutes. I know reading with a single source of light can help me, and I'm hoping the bio notes I need to study will help bore me to the point where I can get to sleep easier.

Good keep it that way, those knock-out pills really screwed me up...

I would recommend some warm milk, and listening to your mp3 player..

Try a little mild form of self-hypnosis, the "Best Me" technique.

There's a wikihow article <a href=http://www.wikihow.com/Hypnotize-Yourself-Using-the-Best-Me-Technique>here.

You can pretty much use any peaceful fantasy you can think of as long as you relate the fantasy to yourself through, Beliefs, then Emotions, then Sensations and finally Thoughts, and keep cycling through them. I think if you simply want to drift off to sleep, then the Motivations and Expectations are optional.

It works for me. Way better than counting sheep, although I haven't decided if this is just because it keeps your brain busier.

Oh yeah, and stay away from high energy food and the internet from like way before you go to sleep.

It's always just another ten minutes or so.

I recommend an interesting novel, rather than dry notes.

If you aren't tired then you might have to burn some energy somehow.

Whatever you do, do not excercise! It stimulates you and makes you produce adrenaline, keeping you awake for longer.

Try some advice from this website:

I'm having the same problem myself. I have to be up in 4 hours or so but my sleep pattern is screwed as I'm currently unemployed >.<

go put some milk in a pot on stove and warm it up, DO NOT use the microwave. use a pot and the stove. drink the milk, while it's warm and then go to sleep.

you can also try reading a book, i really recommend any computer related books, they tend to be overly boring. the O'Reilly animal books are great for putting you to sleep

Milk doesn't actually have enough melatonin to put one to sleep, even when warm. B:
