I'm sitting here at my desk telling myself that I should be in bed right now, it's true, I really should be in bed. See, I have work at 6am (it's 1:13am here and I'd be getting up at 5am to get ready). The problem is recently I've had a lot of trouble falling asleep. All my life I've had difficulty getting to sleep but this last month or so it's gotten worse. I?m not an insomniac, I just think a lot. I?ll lie in bed thinking about what I want to do tomorrow or what I've been doing today or how absurdly messy my desk is... you get the gist of it. And when I say I have trouble going to sleep, I?m not talking 20 or 30 minutes, I?m talking 2 or 3 hours. Because what will happen is after about 45 minutes to an hour of trying to go to sleep, I start thinking about how I?m not asleep but I should be and so the cycle begins.

So for discussion value my little love ferrets of the escapist. Do you have, or have had trouble in the past falling asleep? And do you have any tips to share on getting to sleep?

I've never had way too much trouble getting to sleep. According to my parents, I was hardly ever awake as a baby.
As such, I don't really have any advice for getting to sleep. I know hot chocolate makes me sleepy, that may apply to others.

I've had a very fucked up sleep schedule this summer. Usually going to bed at a about 4am on average, but sometimes I'll just make myself a lot of coffee and stay up through the night so I can go to bed earlier and resume a somewhat normal sleeping pattern. I really ought to sort this shit out before I go back to uni and need to get up reasonably early again.

OT: I tend to be like that myself. Unfortunately i haven't been able to find any way to stop thoughts from popping up in my head.

My advice is: Get as much sleep as you can and settle with going to bed a little earlier the night after.

Follow these quick easy steps to fall asleep!

1. Get into bed
2. Close your eyes
3. Lie immobile, shifting slightly as needed
4. Think about stuff that interests you

Before you know it, your brain will have shut itself off, and you'll wake up hours later wondering where the time went!

I can't get to bed for about 2 hours every night. I have gotten used to it though. Although it would be nice if I could sleep within 20 minutes of getting into bed.

Watch your food intake during the later hours. Cutting back on food and stimulants might help.

When I have trouble sleeping I focus on feeling noise. It sounds bizarre, but I find it calms my restlessness.

Also, that Argonian's eyes remind me of Chloe from Uncharted 2.

Woah, woah, woah, that pet name calling is my thing. I'm going to go cry about how plagiarized I am.
It's my thing now! Muhahahahahahaha!

Odd.

Anyway, yeah I don't really eat much before going to bed anyway.

Hmmm, I used to have trouble going to sleep as well. What worked for me was to stop drinking so much soda, stop eating right before bed and taking some over the counter sleep aids to help me reset my circadian rhythm.

I only have problems if I drink caffeine less than five hours ago. Otherwise I'm asleep in an hour.

1. Stay away from your computer or other visual electronic devices. They can stimulate brain activity and keep you from falling asleep.

2. Try not to eat right before bedtime.

3. Try to think of things that bore you.

4. If you're suffering from insomnia really badly (and if you're old enough), try knocking back a few shots of whiskey or some other strong drink. Alcohol-induced sleep isn't as restful as the sober variety, but it's better than no sleep at all.
