(I've lurked on the Escapist for quite a while, but I wanted to put my 2 cents into this topic and register)
I've worked at Best Buy for almost 5 years now. It looks like most of you are saying the prices are too high. Since this is a videogame forum I decided to target that, and here are price comparisons on a lot of relevant games, plus software, plus movies:
- Adobe Photoshop Elements 10 & Adobe Premiere Elements 10 is $74.99. Amazon sells it for $105. Fry's has it for $149.99.
- Assassin's Creed: Revelations is $19.99. Amazon has it for $39.49, and we're the same price as Gamestop.
- Kid Icarus for the 3DS is $29.99. Gamestop is selling it for $39.99 and Amazon has it for $32.65 plus shipping.
- Madden NFL 12 is $29.99, and Gamestop has it for $59.99. Amazon has it for $42.99.
- Just Dance 3 is $19.99, and Gamestop sells it for $29.99. Same price as Amazon, but with us you get reward zone points AND don't have to wait on shipping.
- Need for Speed: The Run is $19.99, Gamestop sells it for $39.99. Same price as Amazon, but with us you get reward zone points AND don't have to wait on shipping.
- Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 is $34.99, Wal-mart sells it for $39.54, Gamestop has it for $39.99
- Final Fantasy Xiii-2 is $29.99, Amazon has it for $37.18 and Gamestop has it for $39.99.
- Buy 2 3DS games, get one free.
- Buy 2 pre-owned games, get one free.
- Pre-order ANY videogame, get a 40% bonus trade-in credit.
- Buy a PS3 at Best Buy, get a free controller.
Now for other forms of media like blu-rays, the current new releases we have for cheaper as well.
- The Muppets (the new one) blu-ray and dvd combo is $17.99 and Wal-mart has it for $22.96.
-Puss in Boots (blu-ray, dvd, digital copy) is $17.99 and Wal-mart has it for $24.96.
-Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 (Blu-ray, 3D, dvd, digital copy) is $9.99. Or the blu-ray by itself is 7.99. Nobody else comes close to this deal.
On our midnight releases, we let our customers come in the store early (we don't close) instead of waiting outside in line like at Gamestop. We provide drinks and pizza and have videogames playing on our large screen tv's for customers to kill some time before they can buy their game and go home and play.
People saying that they HOPE we go bankrupt and close down is pretty uncalled for. For some reason people are just obsessed with talking about Best Buy's bad customer service, or bad quarterly reports. Kmart and Sears announced 120 stores closing at the end of 2011 and nobody made a big deal about that. We're also opening 100 MORE Best Buy mobile stores in the USA and opening over 400 stores in China. So, I don't really see why everyone is hating on Best Buy all of the sudden. We don't really deserve all the hate we're receiving, if you ask me. Of course, like I said earlier, I work there, so I'm not as eager as everyone else to join in the groupthink mentality.
