Hokay. It's sort of difficult to explain this, but here goes:

I got up this morning. Usual feeling of having a slight cold [I live in Ireland]. So far, so normal. Had a shower. Came downstairs and booted up computer with an intent to work on an essay. First sign that something was amiss was when the boot-up tone sounded..Sort of discordant in one ear.

Now I'm listening to some music, and again, in one ear, it sounds as if the guitar has been replaced with vaguely similar tolling of bells, but in a different key.

What, as they say, the fuck?
Any idea what this could be?

Do you have any feeling of pressure on the ear?
Did you have those symptoms before?
Did you or one of your family members ever have an acute hearing loss (your grandma for example)?
Without any sound on, do you still hear any ringing in that ear?
Any pain?

Don't shoot me for saying this, but...

Did you check your ear for wax? I remember waking up one morning and something that looked like a raisin fell out of my ear.

Or perhaps you have an ear infection.

it could be wax covering your eardrum. that happened to me once. that's why you shouldn't use Qtips. they push it back into it.

If you're not a hypochondriac, then http://www.nhsdirect.nhs.uk/help/index.aspx can normally help you out. If you are a hypochondriac then stay away from it.

However, check everything else that's been suggested first; pressure, ear wax and what not.

This be the work...of the devil! But seriously, unless it sounds really wierd, I wouldn't worry about it. If symptoms persist, please see your local medical practitioner.

I could be a number of things, but it sounds like it may be an infection, or a blockage in your ear tubes, or even a glue ear. You should go to the doctor in case you have an infection. Also, if your ears are blocked with wax, it is much safer to have the doctor remove it with a syringe than to hack at it yourself.

I would go with possibly being an ear infection. Although I've had several and you would probably know damn well if it was an ear infection. The feeling that a spine covered death is slowly crawling through your ear canal makes it readily apparent. It might be just a mild ear infection, but if you're concerned about it you should probably see a doctor. They can be mended relatively easily with antibiotics. I have a problem with my left ear, occasionally starts ringing and I lose all hearing in it, but I would attribute that more to using firearms without ear protection. The multiple ear infections I had as a child probably didn't help.

Its space parasites. Sounds exactly like space parasites.

But seriously. Perhaps you just still have water in you ear. Give it an hour or two and if there is no change, then its probably the onset of an infection.

On a side note, feeling of a light cold? Remember you are in Ireland: Feeling of slight cold normally means a typical summer day (wind+rain).

When you have a cold, your Eustachian tube (the opening connecting your nasal cavity with your inner ear) could get blocked, resulting in pressure differences and some discomfort. It sounds a lot like that's the case. Don't hold my word for it though! If you keep having the same problem for more than a week, see a physician.

I think I'll go with the ebolabrainwormspaceworms diagnosis. My life lacks excitement.
It went away after an hour or two, by the way. Probably water or something.
Thanks a lot regardless =].
