Researchers in Scotland have determined that sitting with your back at a 90° angle is the worst posture of the three postures they tested; it was found to cause the most lateral spinal disk displacement. Slouching forward at <70° was not much better, and resulted in the most spinal disk compression. The best posture was slouching back at 135°.
Levent Caglar from the charity BackCare, added: "In general, opening up the angle between the trunk and the thighs in a seated posture is a good idea and it will improve the shape of the spine, making it more like the natural S-shape in a standing posture."
So will you now, like me, be taking great pleasure in reeducating the next person who sternly tells you to "sit up straight!"?
