I was never too big on Bioshock, though I wasn't quite sure why. There were plenty of reasons for me to enjoy it but, try as I might, I just couldn't. Recently, though, I decided to give it another go, mostly because I'd finished everything else in my games library at least twice already. Just to make things interesting I chose the highest difficulty, turned off the gameplay crutches (like the directional arrow) and added a self-imposed "One Life, No Continues" rule.

It was while dicking around in the options menu that I noticed two things I hadn't seen before: the option to unlock the vertical FOV and the framerate (note that I was playing the 360 version.) I turned on both and began playing the game and was amazed by how much it improved the experience, to the point that when I did inevitably die (by falling off a ledge, of all things) I still wanted to keep going.

I really wish more first-person games on consoles had these options, especially the FOV thing. Moving on to Resistance 3 after playing Bioshock made me feel like I was viewing everything through a hole in a cardboard box, and I really didn't need more incentive to not play that game. Of course, devolopers and publishers these days seem intent on giving you as few options as possible, so I'm not holding out much hope that they'll wise up.
