I know I have a bit of a reputation for hating on consoles and pc's on these forums but I do feel I can see the future a bit clearer than some. Phones are getting ridiculously powerful and I mean stupidly powerful (4K displays, 8 core processors already!!) How long realistically before it surpasses current gen console power? they are almost there!

All people say is 'games on a smartphone cant compare on a tiny screen' 'touch screen controls suck' I completely agree with both statements people fail to understand is:

1) 9/10 modern phones can Wirelessly stream to a TV or have HDMI output.

2) Both android and apple support control pads.

There two features will only get better and better battery life will improve, graphics will continue to improve will consoles stay them same.

Am I wrong to think this?

Well, why even bother making a separate device in the first place?

TVs are getting more powerful with phones. Why not just have a console OS running on the hardware in your TV?

Well for one, we're NOT there. Yes, maybe one day phones will be just as powerful as a PS4 but history has demonstrated that handhelds are a generation behind in terms of power. I suppose eventually we may hit the point where the generation gap does not really exist but until we hit that point, it's kind of silly to predict the incoming death of consoles.

But let's say for fun that this occurs. For some reason, tomorrow Google kicks out a brand new phone that matches the PS4/Xbox. You STILL have one giant issue that you just kind of hand-waved away at the end but is a MUCH bigger issue than you're giving it credit for:

Battery Life

That kind of graphic and that kind of power is going to murder the shit out of a battery. The 3DS, a dedicated handheld (so it's not running the phone iOS or anything normally on your phone) has about five hours of battery life (eight if you turn off everything on the device like the 3D and WiFi). The 3DS isn't anywhere near the power of a PS4/Xbox. It's not even in the same state as the PS4/Xbox.

Unless you plan on giving your phone a laptop battery (which still has a time issue and by this point, I think you've got yourself a tablet in your pocket size-wise), battery is your biggest hurdle. Like your hypothetical phone that is just as powerful as a PS4/Xbox, it's silly to call the incoming death of consoles on something that doesn't exist yet. Maybe they'll find a way to make a super powerful batter that isn't gigantic and isn't pricing itself out but we've got (at least) a generation before that becomes an issue.
