Smash Bros. Director Hints At New Pokemon In Smash 4

An image of Pikachu with what is clearly the Pokemon X version mascot, Xerneas, appeared on the Smash Bros. website.

There seems to be somewhat of a pattern with how Smash Bros. director Masahiro Sakurai is revealing returning fighters for Super Smash Bros. For Wii U and 3DS. Sonic [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/125914-Captain-Olimar-Will-Return-In-The-New-Super-Smash-Bros] was revealed in the lead-up to the release of Sonic Lost World.

So, naturally, given that the fate of three Pokemon characters from Brawl (Lucario, Jigglypuff, and Pokemon Trainer) is still unknown, Pokemon fans have been keeping a keen eye on the Miiverse [http://www.smashbros.com/us/].

"Pic of the day. We have absolutely nothing to announce today regarding Pokémon X and Pokémon Y. Really!"

While assuming that this means Xerneas will be a playable character is a bit of a strectch, in Super Smash Bros. Brawl, the Pokemon Diamond and Pearl version mascots, Dialga and Palkia, appeared as assist characters from the Pokeball item (as did a whole host of other Pokemon).

In Pokemon X and Y, Charizard and Lucario received "Mega Evolutions" [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wrJtBSouq3U], a new form of evolution that only lasts as a temporary transformation. It would definitely make for a neat final smash...

None of the Pokemon were assist trophies, they came out of pokeballs, a completely different item.

Nitpicking aside, I'm not really surprised, only makes sense they'd update the Poke-roster.

My bad. Assist trophies were new in brawl right? Were there pokeballs in melee?

Pokeballs as you would expect, release only Pokemon, while Assist Trophies unleash other non-Pokemon characters.

But yeah, pokeballs have been in the series since the first game, while Assist trophies were introduced in Brawl.

The ultimate troll in the original Smash Bros was when you first got Mew out of a Pokeball, and expected something epic to happen, just for it to float away after doing nothing.

I'm pretty sure that Xerneas and Yveltal will be Pokeball mons. The current mascot legendaries always are. I wouldn't be surprised if we also got Reshiram and Zekrom. As for playables, fingers crossed for the return of Mewtwo after he was cut from Brawl.

I haven't read much about Smash Bros 4. Did they get rid of the random Tripping?
Tripping is 100% confirmed to be gone. And thank God for that, I say.

OT: Curiosity abounds. Pokeball Pokemon reveals? New playable Pokemon characters? Pokemon-themed stage? I eagerly await a reveal.

Personally, I hope Mewtwo comes back. He's seeing some new love with the Mega Evolutions, so seeing him as a playable character again would be nice. And a Mega Evolution Final Smash for him would be pretty rad.

Yes they did!

OT: I can't wait to see some Pokeballs and pokemon in action!

There is only one solution that would make sense IMO, besides Zoroark, here is his final smash:

Blaziken would instantly be my favorite choice.

I can't get the image from my head that that is actually pikachus' tail.
So I guess the news topic should be: Pikachu to get evolved tail in SSB4?

Interested in seeing new Pokemon, but still don't have a Wii U and can't afford one atm. So it's not on my radar right now.

So basically, Pokemon is finally doing what Digimon was doing in season 1?

Oh, right, everyone's forgotten about Digimon by now, so now is a good time to start copying them. XP
Could you research before making comments like that? In all honesty, what's the point of doing that? It just makes you look uninformed and ignorant.

As much as I love the new sixty-something Pokemon, none of them strike me as good additions to the Smash roster. The Mega evolutions on the other hand...

I would love to play as Blaziken, but I've always figured that it would end up being another Captain Falcon clone (Fire Punch, Blaze Kick, Sky Uppercut, etc.). I can see either Lucario or Mewtwo making a return though, with their respective Mega evolutions. Since the latter has two, the former seems more likely.

Given the amount they've been pushing Mewtwo and Charizard this gen, I wouldn't be surprised to see Mewtwo return as playable (with either Mega-Form as a Final Smash), and perhaps the Pokémon Trainer will be scaled back to just playing as Charizard alone...

well I am certainly curious now; research what in this case? What you've said doesn't really make sense in the context of their comment.
I mean, they are right, digimon did temporary evolution long before pokemon. I'm guessing by research you could only be meaning how the pokemon anime came out before the digimon anime, but even then what exactly is your point? It doesn't make them any less correct.
(...unless you're referring someone bizarrely to the other part of their comment, about no one remembering digimon, in which case i don't quite understand, they were just being facetious, so what's to research?).

edit: ((given the pokemon avatar though, guessing it's probably just a case of you feeling resentful and make a counter-arguement that doesn't quite make sense for what was actually said XD))

In regards to the thread topic, i do kinda hope they keep the pokemon trainer, i found their dynamic to be interesting, though it would be cool to see different gen trainers(with corresponding starters) replace/join the roster.

Clearly they need an item though where a bunch of trainers from the new game race across the stage on a stampede of gogoats :p

There will always be new Pokemon in new SSB games.

The question is all about playability. Personally I think they are either going to bring back Mewtwo or Lucario, and their new smash move will be them mega evolving into their respective forms.

Bwahaha!

Okay, here's my "research" straight from a Pokemon fan site:

http://bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net/wiki/Mega_Evolution said:
In order to undergo a Mega Evolution, the Pokémon must be holding the applicable Mega Stone. The player must use their Mega Ring, which contains a Key Stone, to resonate with the Mega Stone held by their Pokémon to trigger Mega Evolution. Mega Evolution can only occur in battle and disappears after the battle is over.
So in other words, "Mega Evolution" is an evolutionary state triggered by special symbolic items that force the Pokemon into a highly-advanced state during combat, and they promptly are forced to leave that state when combat ends because the transformation is temporary and too strong to sustain permanently.

Am I wrong in my interpretation there? No, I'm not, at least not if the data provided is correct. So I've "researched" it just fine.

So now let's talk about Digimon, whose TV show featured monsters that would regularly evolve into highly-advanced states that are triggered by special symbolic items, and would (out of combat) drop out of those evolution states because of the energy they require to maintain. Sound familiar? Of course it does, it's essentially the same damn thing. Pokemon uses "stones", Digimon used "crests" (and later, "eggs" and other such devices). All of my buddies who still play Pokemon (the few who do) even explained it to me as "it's basically Digimon but for Pokemon". Hell, Digimon even called one of their evolutionary states "Mega". This is as blatant of a concept ripoff as they come, and even the fans know it.

The only "uninformed and ignorant" comment here is yours, since it seems you actually thought that Pokemon was being new and innovative for stealing a competitor's idea from about 12-14 years ago.
Mega evolution wasn't introduced until the third season of Digimon, and the concept of "use found item, become powerful" is far older (for example, every Super Sentai show ever: Power Rangers, Sailor Moon, etc.). Pokemon didn't "rip off" Digimon so much as draw inspiration from the same sources. Digimon is an apt comparison, though, as a means to conceptualize a rather complex (and extremely visual) mechanism.
