So I finally got around to getting Super Smash Bros. for Wii U (along with Bayonetta 2) and its still damn fun. But it seems to be a lot harder than I remember Brawl being. I typically could play Brawl on 6/7 yet for SSBWU I can barely handle 5 and Normal even for characters I used to be good with.

Sonic I'm at least still decent with.

Ike though seems to be a bit slower than he was in Brawl, and he doesn't seem to hit quite as hard.

Zero Suit Samus (yes, I used to use the code that let you start as her instead of having to play as Samus and getting a Smash Ball) even though they made her a distinct character seems to kind of suck compared to her Brawl version.

Zelda/Shiek still seem to be okay.

Link seems to be even more of a brick than before and doesn't seem to hit as hard, just like Ike.

Maybe I'm just out of practice, but I also don't remember Crazy Hand/Master Hand being this hard before. Did they decide that they were too easy and stealth buff their difficulty or something?

I noticed the same steepness in the difficulty curve; I think it has to do with the AI getting revamped so that the amiibos could learn. Also, I think nintendo has actually been paying attention to how people play the game competitively and programmed the AI with some of the same tactics (Team Ninja did something similar with Dead or Alive 5). I've seen the AI controlled characters using moves and techniques that only ultra-competitive players used back in melee.

Just wait until you get an amiibo and get it to max level (which won't take long because they level fast): that thing will win every battle, especially if it's been trained well.

I agree with you on Zero Suit Samus; I actually don't like any of the characters that were split (samus, zelda) as much as before. I felt like they were really well balanced in prior games, but when the big N split them they couldn't quite get them back to that level. Also, at an intellectual level it bugs me to see zero suit samus as a separate character because that's basically her underwear (don't get me wrong, it didn't bug me to play as her before and I really like her), and it just feels wrong to have that separate. I understand the technical limitations that made them make these design choices, but it still sucks a bit, especially for the way it changed zelda/sheik's overall gameplay.

I've had a lot of fun playing the game with friends, but that higher difficulty has put a damper on it. I can't seem to find the right balance between challenge and fun, and I'd wager I'm not the only one.

I never played Brawl much but the single player seemed less fun than Melee for me. Maybe im remembering it wrong or it was just because it was a different time and place but Smash for the WiiU did not suck me in. I played with a friend for the MP i.e the main meat of the game and we were done in about 20 mins we just did not enjoy it much same happened with Mario Kart 8. Only with MK8 I could tell I would never have fun with it, it just lacked the spark of some of the previous MK outings with Smash I feel like im missing something.

I have just got a GC pad adaptor and a plug in internet connection for the WiiU so will give it another go see where the onlines at.

So a little more into this;

1: HA! Suck it CH/MH. Beat your ass finally.

2: Is online supposed to be this laggy? I never noticed MH3U or MK8 being this bad, but nearly every match on SSBWU has been pretty harsh with the lag.

3: So I've been trying to get better with some characters. But most of the videos I've found online aren't for them, or are just people 1v1'ing in mirror matches or online which doesn't help a ton. The characters I've been trying with are:

Lucina
Greninja
Link
Zelda

You'll get used to it. It didn't take that long to go from 4-6 up to 8 and 9. Now my Amiibo is about on par with me and those battles can be fun :D
Even classic mode goes that way. levels 5-7.9 is were you'll be for a while, then with maybe 50% of the characters done (if you play it that much) then you get to level 8 and above and have to do the last boss pretty well and then learn MasterFortress and how that works. But then a few characters later you should have that in your grasp and just small mistakes will be costly.
Then you go online and start doing some 1v1 and when the right person comes across you'll be shitting youself xD. I had won 5 or 6 games in 1v1 with maybe 2 or 3 different opponents (they left after 2 losses) and then suddenly there was a guy who chose Ness, I was feeling pretty good going on a win streak like that and got absolutely crushed. He killed my 2 lives and I got 34 per cent on his first life, and that was the same story, I tried him about 8 or 9 matches with 5 different chars and that 34 per cent on his first life was the best I could do. I didn't play again that day, just out of respect for someone like that.

I didn't play Brawl, had Melee which I played A LOT back in the day but I never bought Brawl, can't remember why. So for me this game is absolutely fantastic! :)
There are a lot of tips and trick to learn, a good way is to go spectate some games online (also a good way to get money) and watch some moves and pick up nice tricks every once in a while.

There's also a "WiiU Online Multiplayer" usergroup here on the Escapist if you want to join. We have a list of people who you can add as friends on the Nintendo and play together with. And when some new news comes on games or other stuff we discuss them there. It's been quiet for a while there but feel free to look in.

I never played much Brawl but I did play through SSE and I played a good bit of Melee...based on that and based on the 3DS version though, the Wii U version is a whole lot more difficult than the others. It was for me anyway but I think a part of it was the re-balancing of characters. I used to main Link but I found myself far more effective using Bowser this time around. Still, it took me a while to actually beat Classic mode on anything higher than 4 and I don't see myself doing it with everybody on the Wii U version; a feat I was able to do on the 3DS.
