SMITE: Literally third person Dota

In the same vein of Super Monday Night Combat, SMITE is taking the interesting and strategic mold of Dota and putting it in a much more engaging gameplay style. Super MNC was Third Person Shooter Dota-inspired. SMITE is literally Dota in the third person from the looks of things. The heroes are "Gods" from various mythologies. Free to play as well, as all the MOBAs generally have to be.

I'm interested to see how this turns out. But the fact it's from Hi-Rez (Tribes Ascend guys) makes me worried for how the store system turns out. I mean Tribes has a theoretically optimal system, but it's held back by the Monopoly money system and the obscene amount of grind it forces free players to go through. If SMITE makes the same mistakes, I doubt I'll play the game past the curiosity phase once it hits Open Beta. But honestly, I'm glad alternative MOBAs like this and SMNC are popping up. Because while I can appreciate Dota for how well-designed it is, the "Creep escorting to tower defense with RPG elements" whoop dee doodle being an interesting take on things, the way the gameplay and combat plays just always felt a bit too passive for my tastes.

Thoughts?

Well it seems to be the game I expected from Valve, but they just want copycat lazy on us.
Looks and plays very smoothly so it is a very good contender to other games, also with this setup they can go to any console as well.

But the downside is this looks like another flavour on a highly oversaturated MOBA market, even for an old genre vet like me those two videos feel like I've had my fill, however for a player that was looking to enter the MOBA scene this is probably the ideal choice.

Seeing this, I really think this is what should've happened to DoTA 2.
I mean you already have HoN out there which is insanely similar to DoTA and you have LoL which is a twist on the DoTA formula.

They tried this with Warhammer Wrath of Heroes or something, didn't they?
Apparently it was shit.

My mates in the SMITE beta, he enjoys it but the main problem he finds is that most people don't realise its a MOBA and don't play accordingly.

What's with this sudden explosion of MOBA games? First there was HoN, then LoL, then Valve and Blizzard starting making their own, now EVERYONE wants a slice of the pie!

I've heard that this is actually immensely fun and watched a couple of people stream it yesterday.
This can't really be played like a typical MOBA (the 3rd person view itself disallows it), but it's got plenty of strategy.

Making Dota its own standalone game that removes the limits of the WCIII engine while preserving what makes it great since the days of its inception and the years of dedicated development and balancing AND adding in Valve's own quirkiness by giving EACH hero tons of dialogue that fleshes out their characters.

Must be "copycat lazy."

I personally don't fancy 3rd person view in an AoS game. There's a reason why RTS games have an overhead view of things.

And I can admire a dev that tries to turn a few standards on their heads to see what happens. Whether this one will work or not is yet to be seen.
