In the same vein of Super Monday Night Combat, SMITE is taking the interesting and strategic mold of Dota and putting it in a much more engaging gameplay style. Super MNC was Third Person Shooter Dota-inspired. SMITE is literally Dota in the third person from the looks of things. The heroes are "Gods" from various mythologies. Free to play as well, as all the MOBAs generally have to be.
I'm interested to see how this turns out. But the fact it's from Hi-Rez (Tribes Ascend guys) makes me worried for how the store system turns out. I mean Tribes has a theoretically optimal system, but it's held back by the Monopoly money system and the obscene amount of grind it forces free players to go through. If SMITE makes the same mistakes, I doubt I'll play the game past the curiosity phase once it hits Open Beta. But honestly, I'm glad alternative MOBAs like this and SMNC are popping up. Because while I can appreciate Dota for how well-designed it is, the "Creep escorting to tower defense with RPG elements" whoop dee doodle being an interesting take on things, the way the gameplay and combat plays just always felt a bit too passive for my tastes.
Thoughts?
