Just starting Dark Souls i found the smith in ruins below the firelink shrine and ive gotten a titanite CHUNK off a Black Knight and even used a twinkling titanite on my sword of Astora but where do you find normal titanite shards?

Titanite shards can be farmed from many of the beginning monsters but I fine Balder Knights the easiest. They surround the area around the first bell. Here is a helpful page when it comes to all things smiting in Dark Souls.

What is your plan for your build?

Titanite is pretty damn rare at points, so if I were you I'd be careful about using it.

This page is kinda lengthy, but it should give you everything you need about the various upgrade paths for weapons, and where you find titanite.

EDIT: DAMN IT! NINJIA'D

Also, if you just want regular shards, you can buy them off of the blacksmith in Undead Parish for 800 souls each.

That's the escapist for yeah, I have been here for years and the community here suffer the most beautiful irony. Great people here but the irony is gorgeous.

Anyway for build wise, there is mostly 4 types of 3 builds.

Light(0-25% equip load),
Medium(25%-50%)
Heavy(50%-100%).

Than there is-

Strength builds usually are the heavy hitting people with big weapons.
Dex are the fast hitting weapons.
Intel for the most part are for damaging magic
Faith usually have the support spells like healing.

Basic Weapons(like the long sword) are able to upgrade to plus 15 but you can manipulate it's damage scaling to compliment on of those stats(except for Dex, they are unique to weapon.)

If you are happy with the meduim armor, I suggest either taking that to +15 or you can grab the Elite Knight in the Dark Woods if you are looking for a different look. There is the Eastern set in their but only the chest and helm are worth it and you need to spend 20000 souls for the Crest of Artorias to get it. Your shield will serve you well up until the silver knight so don't be afraid to upgrade that.

If you like the Sword of Astoria You can make a Divine Weapon of your choosing which scales off of faith. Scaling works by increasing the damage of said weapon every stat after its requirement. so if your sword requires 14 in a stat and scales, you will do more damage when you increase it said stat to 15 and so on. Most weapons start with D scaling but with upgrading most reach around B or A. Usually the lower requirement weapons are better for damage scaling but their is examples like the Black Knight Halberd which has high requirements but does so much damage, it doesn't matter.

Edit: So example Divine Long sword 10 has 129 phys +159 magic. and has a B scaling in faith, great damage. there is another 110 special damage to against the undead.

mmk im over 50% and trying to change that through endurance gain so i guess im looking for medium but to clarify are you saying that the straight sword of astoria scales with both faith and strength? or only non-unique divine weapons scale with both strength and faith, and on the other character i started wanderer with the scimitar which seems to start with high dex scaling is that just an awesome weapon?

When you look at a weapon, you see letters at the bottom that range from A to E, if it has any letter there than it scales + damage from the stat. The scimitar has a really high Dex Scaling(B). It also scales with strength(E)but you will get more out of it by increasing your Dex stat.

Edit: I should add if basic weapons are ones that upgrade from Titanite shards and have the most flexibility.

Sorry if I am being confusing. XD

My tip? Don't do what I did on my first run and use the boss souls for, well souls. It was only my second run that I found out how to make weapons using them.

P.S. Has anyone found out what the hell the Guardian soul does yet?

nope you make sense its not that complicated really actually more simple than some games crafting and scaling wise no random effects on weapons with no description of what they do(unless im just not there yet XP). but just checking does scaling increase through improvement of the weapons?

I think that's the only blacksmith in the game that doesn't sell normal titanite shards. Every other smith sells them for I think 500 souls a pop.

The only titanite that is seriously rare is the titanite slab. I think you can farm them from the phantom knight guys in the New Londo Ruins, but they're still very hard to get.
