If it were a Solid Snake game, I'd feel David Hayter would be more essential. I don't think it'd be the end of the world if they used someone else, provided the new guy did a stellar job.
Aside from some lines coming out sounding slightly cheesy, David Hayter was outstanding as Snake in MGS1 especially; but it's something I felt was gradually breaking down over time, and midway into the series it started sounding more like a forced impersonation of Snake than the real deal.
I wouldn't mind either way. You at least know what you'll get with David Hayter; and even though the voice hasn't sounded as natural recently, he remains a really solid VA. He may even show this time that he hasn't really lost the voice.
