Hello there fellow Escapists/Escapees/Escapians/Es....

I was watching the finals of the Players Championship Tournament yesterday and we've got two big competitions coming, China Open begins tomorrow and World Championships later in April, this got me wondering how many of my fellow Escapistians know this sport, follow it, or even play it themselves?

Personally I've been following the sport for close to 10 years now, it caught my interest at the age of about 16/17. I've been playing it for that same amount of time. I'm not good at it, but it's fun and challenging, and different to the other stuff I do (gym, football, tennis...). I used to live in a small town with just one table (that I knew of at least) but about 2 years ago I moved to a bigger city and here are a few good pool/snooker clubs around.

The one I go to is the same our (Finlands) only professional snooker player, Robin Hull, trains in. We also have a weekly tournament every Tuesday which I usually take part in. It's for fun but costs 6? to take part and winner gets 50% of the pot, second 30% and 3rd 20%, so there's still something to play for, I've even won it a few times and even had to play against Robin 3 times so far. We use handicaps and it's 6 red snooker (just one frame) so he (Robin) had to give me 40 points ahead which even makes it quite challening for him when he joins in. It's mainly for fun but still competative. I try to go and play/train once or twice a week other than that.

As I said above I'm no good, my maximum break in a match (in the 6red snooker tournament) is 38 and in training I haven't even broke the half a century limit yet. I'd say my strength is in the safety department and that's also the parts I enjoy when watching it on telly, when there's just one or two reds left and no good chances and both try to snooker each other :D

So, what's your Snooker story?

If this thread gathers enough interest I might even make a user group, if you're interested in one then feel free to announce the interest and I might make one (didn't find one when I looked in the user groups, if there is one, feel free to direct me there).

I have watched it on the television in the past but can't say i've ever realy followed snooker, i have also played it casualy in pub's and the like pretty good fun for an hour or two.

Also trick shots are always impressive to see, even though it goes against the rules of playing normaly.

It's like playing an RTS. I can tell someone what to do, and I can see it unfold in my mind.

However, my skill is much lesser than my mind, and while I can see the angles needed to pot a perfect games, I always sink the white straight into the hole. Or I sink the black by accident and immediately lose the game.

Now I only play with people much drunker than me so I can perhaps win.

Any sport involving a ball I am useless at. Snooker involves multiple balls so you can probably imagine how that works out.

However....
one night in the pub, perhaps the stars had aligned, but I played a match where I came across as at least 'competent'.
I think it was the beer, that great settler of the nerves. (It is really daunting playing snooker in a crowded pub with everyone watching, especially when you are crap)
Anyway, I actually went on a bit of a streak, potting something like 4 balls in a row!
Still got beat but oh well, ha ha

I don't play Snooker. I play straight Pool. The only snooker I do is the one where you pull a fast one on people and run away, sniggering.

Straight pool... as in 8ball, 9ball?
Do you compete or just as a hobby?
Strictly a hobby, classic 8-Ball game. It's a nice and relaxing game you can have drinks and conversation along with. I couldn't compete. I mean, I'm not bad. I apply the imagination and geometry to it, but my hand isn't steady enough to go pro.

Aight' yeah I sometimes do 8 and 9 ball with mates since it's a bit easier and can be played more relaxed than snooker, and especially in 9ball anyone can basically win :D
I've got the same with snooker, I can apply the thoughtprocess and I understand the way everything moves, but the skill isn't there :p

I sometimes play Snooker, 8Ball and 9Ball pool, and sometimes I like to play actual billiards, the one with no holes.

When it comes right down to it I like 9Ball the best because it's essentially the easiest. 8Ball, Snooker, and Billiards games can draw them selves out way too long. 9Ball is fun because it's a quicker game and I can usually get several rounds in before becoming exhausted.

I'm a pool man but outside of playing for the joy of others company, I would never take it to a real competitive level.
