Snow. Should it really cause this much trouble?

Something I hate about snow in England is listening to town-bound SUV owners who think two inches of snow every couple of years justifies owning obnoxious, unparkable, fuel guzzling 4x4 monstrosities. Especially on days when I've managed to cycle into work.

People lose thier minds when something happens that usually doesn't. That's because in general people are panicky and ignorant animals.

It's quite funny exactly how much our country collapses with a little bit of snow.

Plus, everyone loves having a snow day off, even if you have to make up for it some other time

At least it comes slowly. Imagine a city in the wake of 7" of snow falling straight down in one large clump.

Agreed that we aren't well prepared for this, we've never needed to. It's so completely different to what everyone is used to whereas in Scandinavia/Canada/America/ most other places it's normal so it's not such a big deal.

I despise snow. Sure, it looks pretty at first... until you realise that you've got to put up with all the crap that comes along with it. The cold. I don't know about you, but I'm not a huge fan of sub-minus-20-degree temperatures day in and day out. With windchill, your skin will turn to ice in a matter of minutes outside. My hands are nearly permanently dry and cracked because of it, and I wear gloves.

Then you've got the people. Oh my. The people are pretty much the worst part of it. You see, for whatever reason, whenever it snows, people suddenly get stupider. A lot stupider. They stop paying attention to their surroundings and responding to others in public. They lose what little skills they had in piloting their vehicles and wind up running down pedestrians at every other crosswalk. For some reason they feel that they don't have to shovel the sidewalks outside their houses, even though it's illegal not to (not like anyone would ever take a complaint seriously, of course, so fuck that).

What's perhaps worst, though, is that these people inflate to about twice their regular size via their donning of large, puffy clothing, and become about twice as slow as they are normally. Since the average person is already quite slow-moving, this means that now they are incredibly slow-moving. With this extra space taken up by their ridiculous attire, and because nobody fucking shovels their sidewalk, this means that I constantly get backed up behind slow-moving fuckwits who are completely unaware of the environment around them. And fat chance one of them moving out of the way for you - nope, it's always got to be me who climbs over the snowbank so this asshole can trudgeon on by unimpeded. Every. Single. Fucking. Time.

So yeah, fuck snow. It only makes an already intolerable world even worse. But damn is it picturesque!

I say no snow is good snow. Sure when I was a kid, I loved it. School would close so I'd get a free day off. Now it just annoys me. First of all, I hate the cold. Winter is my nemesis. Secondly, it has to do with where I live. I'm in southeastern Virginia in the U.S.A. We don't get a lot of snow here. So on the rare occasions we do get snow, everything shuts down. Even for a couple of inches. The localities here are not equipped to handle regular snowfall. So this means that no one wants to go out, which means no one is coming into my store to do business. On top of it being cold and the fact that most people around here turn into drooling neanderthals when driving in ice or snow.

EDIT: I will admit freshly fallen snow does look nice though.

Personally, I'm loving all this snow. I've had a really easy week and playing in it will never get old.
It will get old as soon as you can drive your own car. I hate that stuff. Everyone else drives even slower than they usually do (yeah, I like to drive fast, even in the city), it makes the roads slippy and it's a real pain to get stuck in it at 4 o'clock in the morning with nobody around to help you

Aw, you poor folks, six inches is so much snow. WE'VE HAD THREE FEET IN DECEMBER ALONE!!! My snowblower's belt broke after the first six inches and the new belt is on back order and still hasn't arrived. I live on a corner lot with around 100ft of sidewalk, two driveways (one is big), and it's on a slope. I hate snow like I hate Latvians!...I actually don't hate Latvians, I just couldn't think of anything else.

Now, with all of my bitching aside, that snow must have been pretty crazy? London isn't a city that's set up for a whole lot of snow, so I can imagine how bonkers it was.

Snow is handled pretty well in New York. It never really accumulates that much on the roads unless it's coming down a lot faster than the plows can move it out of the way.

I think those two bolded sections might be related.

Only in England could an underground transport system be shut down due to snow.
But not living in london, it doesn't affect me.
And, being immature and childish, I love snow. The day I stop loving snow is the day I consider myself to have gotten old.

Its been fun for me. Though this morning I slipped over 5 or 6 times. We have a layer of ice and then a layer of snow here so its impossible to not slip. Doubt I'll be going to work tomorrow :D

The snow's been great fun but I agree it's ridiculous how everything is just completely shut down for it.

It's not snow that causes trouble so much as ice (that generally comes with it), that's what:
1. Destroys Power Lines
2. Increases Danger on the roads
3. Causes Trees to collapse
4. Etc.

Here in US they seem to freak out and shut down the public transportation and schools as soon as they see a single snowflake. Although I am the one to talk, Im used to going to school at anything above -40 celsius. They only closed schools when it hits -40 in Russia (at least they used to), but the transport system never stopped, snow or no snow.
But doesn't your transportation system double as a bomb shelter? I would hope no snow can mess that up!

I think most of it is someone saying one thing, and everyone believing it. "Man this snow is going to shut down everything!" says the news reporter. Next day, everything is closed because people think everything MUST be closed. If we people just said "man this'll be one helluva snow storm! Lots of snowballs and shoveling!" then things would move almost as though the snow never happened.

As for the school system in the states. Somewhere along the line, someone crashed a bus, and some kid died. That's how all those policies start.
