today, my PS3 died.

yup, I was pissed off. Although the customer service helpline were very effecient and helpful, this doesn't prevent the fact that replacing my warranty-void 60 gb PS3 will cost £140. So, this got me thinking: would it be worth getting an Xbox 360 instead?

Previously, this was unthinkable for me - I often prided myself for being a hardcore PS3 fanboy. BUT being put in the situation that I'm in has infact made me quite reluctant to buy another PS3, since the death my current one was through no fault of my own.

Then again, getting a 360 would mean replacing all my games, including a full band set for Guitar Hero... which, of course, would cost a small fortune, quite easily more than the 360 itself. On top of that, I'm not exactly sure how many hidden costs there are with the 360, though I know they do exist...

So! Escapists! I've decided to get your opinion on this matter - which do you think is best, fellow nerds?

oh, and of course...

even though their rather likely.... still! any fanboyism will be reported. Please only give mature and valid opinions!

edit: also, does anyone know what replacement PS3 they give? Do they give the exact same model as your current PS3, or whatever is available? Cause I would like to have backwards compatability which my dead PS3 does (sorry, did) have...

No. Absolutely not. Replace your PS3. You'd end up paying more for a 360 and to replace all those games, and you'd be getting a console that's way more likely to die on you.

Buy a Wii!

Jk. Had ya goin' there though, huh?
Uh yeah I'd have to know a little more about you (mostly how big video gaming is for you, and how much money you have available for video game equipment)

Although admittedly, Wii isn't a bad idea. Cheap and fun, but again, not sure what your game preferences are.

Are there any games solely for the 360 that you feel will justify the costs? That's the only question that needs to be answered really.

The 360 has no hidden costs that I can think of... If you read the product description it says what you get, and everyone knows Live is not free.

Well its only 140$ and you have all those PS3 games already. Not sure what an xbox is going for now, but im sure its not 140$. If you really want to try something different then go for it and get an xbox, if not just get another PS3.
Second that motion.
£140 not $. That's about $200 or so at the moment I think, or possibly more.

360's are about £120 or so, plus with the ps3 games being sold he'd have enough for a few new ones. The question is whether the exclusives are worth it to him.

I am a 360 Fanboy... that said, buy the new PS3. You have the games, you obviously love the system, and yes, there are hidden costs. Try to download anything on XBox and you will have to shell out cash. Considering the fact that the lowest amount of MS Points costs $5 US (Prolly like 2.50ish or less in the funky L Denomination) and the fact that XBL isn't free, go with the Sony.

First off, how much is that in US dollars?

If you already have a large library and plenty of DLC I'd suggest getting another PS3.
I personally believe the Xbox 360 has a better selection of games and downloads. At the same time, you MUST buy a warranty for your Xbox if you get one though, since it tends to get a Red Ring of Death every so often. The only "Hidden Cost" you would have to pay is the yearly $50 (whatever that is in pounds.) but is completely worth it.

In the end, it's really up to you.
Also, you can't look down on fanboyism with the quote "I often prided myself for being a hardcore PS3 fanboy"

Just saying. :p

definitely buy a new ps3
with a 360 not only would you have to pay for online membership but you may also have to deal with the red of death

Nah, a 360 would be way to expensive to completely change, and it seems to me that you're just venting, don't do anything you (or your pocket) might regret.

It's a no-brainer man, you own all the PS3 stuff, just buy another one.

Replace the PS3
As the ninjas above me stated, a lot cheaper.

Plus, the 360 isn't exactly the most reliable in terms of hardware stability.

Never heard of any such news.

To the OP: listen to everyone else and get a new PS3. You won't have to replace all the games on it. The 360 itself already costs more than it takes to replace your system, and you have to buy all new games (and someone help you if you're going to add Guitar Hero/Rock Band to your list). Then you have to pay for XBL if you want to play online, though $50 U.S. a year is the least of your worries.

I'd pay to get it fixed, seeing as 360's have a less then stellar track record(speaking from experience, mine died last christmas) Plus, to get a 360 would be $200, plus $60 for hard drive, plus $100 for wi-fi, plus $50 a year for live.

This is the first I've heard of.
Sorry, I've just seen a few threads pop up here over the last few days regarding the PS3's failing. Figured there was something big up.
Hmm.. well I hope nothing bad is happening to PS3's. But so far, mine's going strong.

nah its not fixing, their gona replace the system itself. Which also begs the question of whether they'll give me a lower quality 40 gb PS3 instead, which I really don't want... (my current one is 60 gb with backward compatability)

still, I do get what your saying about the prices...

They should replace it with the same type of PS3, as far as I know.
