Ok first off I admit I never played one, but I've heard enough the description about them, fun your character being near invincible, satisfying to kill more enemies. But I was playing Brink while in my complaints I was comparing it to Fallout 3, (I HATED Brink by the way, bored me to tears through its boring combat, uninteresting everything from guns story and worlds and generally pointlessness with character creation crap, not to mention the "Always move" is bullspit, I got alot more kills just shooting from cover and died alot more by moving) and I noticed, Fallout 3 fits the definition of a fun shooter. You can take alot of hits and rarely need to be in cover, you have a huge variety of weapons to annihilate your enemies with depending on what you feel like doing, and it's generally fun and satisfying. This led to comparing to Just Cause 2 and the other sandbox games like it like GTA or Saints Row, which also seem to follow the definition.
So perhaps they didn't go away, they just splintered and evolved into different genres?
EDIT: I just played some flash Doom and yah I still stand behind my statement....
