This is something I'm seeing more and more on the net but no one is actually talking about it. I guess it's because the companies are small or the games were basically going to be bad freeium money grabs in the first place that we just ignore these kinds of things. Or it's due to things like Adblockers and other programs that shut these kinds of ads down. Still, think we should call them on such actions before it becomes a larger problem, if that is possible.

So to those that might have an Ad blocker up 24/7 or those that don't know what I'm talking about, numerous ads are starting to pop up for games that are either all flash or just ripping characters for marketing.

For a game that's all flash, Total Domination comes to mind. Video ads for it sell it as either a FPS or strategy game, one that looks like it could compete with the big boys like Halo or Starcraft. It's not, just another resource management game that has easily been chopped and copied probably a few hundred times, just swaping the paint job out. I don't know why this one sticks in my mind. Maybe it's because the ad looked so good and so well done compared to other games in this collection. But it's just sad that the ad probably cost more money that a good chunk of the game to make.

And then we get to just good old honest plagiarism. Probably current 'king' would be a game called Cyber Monsters, featuring characters from Anime, Pokemon, Link, Pit, and others. And that's even if they decide to rip straight from the source as some ads were pictures ripped from art sites. But a newer up and coming 'queen' would be League of Angels, who's main selling point is basically we have busty girls in little clothing. While that might be true, said ads show up DOA and Touhou characters!

Now I know advertising doesn't really tell you the whole truth but come on! Aliens Colonial Marines got away with this and that was a big name title! So fellow escapists, is this something we should just ignore with adblocks and fast clicks? Or is this growing trend in marketing going to continue to grow. As I said, Colonial Marines tried to pull smoke and mirrors on us.

Mate you do understand the very essence of marketing is deception, lies, trickery and hustling right?
Their job is to make you want and buy shit you never needed luring you with promises of things it will never do, and as long as they manage just that it's a job well done.

Sadly we all just take that sort of backstabbing as part of our culture and move along, possibly even attack someone who dares call it what it is.

Even without ad-blockers I reckon most gamers have become really good at instantly recognizing ads, ignoring them and avoiding accidental clicks.
I just assume everything advertised this way is shit or worse, malware, so there's no point in worrying about such details as the hypothetical game actually looking like the titties in the ad.

I've been noticing the LoA ads as well and agree that they should be called out. As much as Mr K is right about the very nature of marketing, I'm still heavily opposed to blatant false advertising and straight claiming other peoples work as your own. Hope these guys get DMCA'd or sued over this crap.

I report every single game/app I see on Google Play that uses art I know is ripped off, even just for the app icon.

Yeah I know that's what marketing does. Used to it after all these years. I guess that's why games like Total Domination get a pass.

But it's the blantent rip off of other games/characters/ideas that kinds gets to me. I mean this would be like a small time restaurant selling the "Large Mac". Or a soda coming out called "Yepsi". I mean at least some games/companies put effort into the ads(which could have gone into the the actual game) but it's incredible lazy to just take footage from something else and slap your logo on it.

And given how some companies treat youtube videos, I would have thought they would go after those that completely rip them off.
